I just bought tickets for DD to take USAir to Indianapolis in Nov. While reading the "fine print" I learned that USAir will allow you to cancel ANY airfare, for a full refund and no change fee, during the first 24 hours following making the reservation. I guess SW and JB aren't the only ones who let you change your plans. Admittedly the USAir window is narrow... but better than none!

Most airlines have a 24 hour window, either implicitly stated as you found or as an easy exception process.

I believe there was a law recently passed that require airlines to offer a 24 hour cancellation.

The rule requiring a 24 hour cancellation window takes effect in Jan 2012. I don't remember the exact date.

Spirit and Allegiant are going to court in an attempt to block the new regulations.

January 24 is the scheduled effective date. Also note that it will only apply "if the reservation is made one week or more prior to a flight’s departure." But nothing prevents an airline from being more generous.
