US Air - changing passenger name

I have always flown Southwest and have had to change info before, but never with US Airways - I'll explain first - I am taking my son in 3 weeks for his 18th birthday and my Dad along with us. We have a SWA flight down from Buffalo, but I booked US Airways returning as they had a cheaper flight later in early evening than SWA. Now my Dad may have to have his dental surgery the same week we are going, so I would have to cancel his flight. My 16 yo DS would go in his place in that case, so would I be able to switch the ticket to his name, or re-book it at a higher price? Thanks to anyone who has experience with US Air. I know with SWA I'll have to re-book with my credit once I cancel Dad's ticket.

I had to cancel a ticket for my niece one time on US, they said the ticket could be reused with a $100 change fee within one year of original purchase date but could only be used by her. We didn't end up rescheduling within the year and I lost the whole ticket money (over $200). When I did end up taking her, I booked SW because they have such easy cancellation rules.

I don't believe any carriers allow you to directly change the name on a ticket. For SW, you would have to cancel your dad's ticket and use the credit to book a ticket for your 16 year old at current prices.

I booked with NWA and DD's friend might have to cancel and it works that way with NWA as well.....even though the ticket was paid for with my credit card.

Sadly....you may have an easier and less expensive time changing his surgery than changing his airline ticket.

I have heard a rare occasion where they waive the $100.00 change fee.....and one time it was because of emergency surgery, so you may as well try. But be prepared to get nowhere, as that's the norm.
