Urgent help required

Anna, all your sister really needs to do for the time being is use plenty of moisturiser (the greasier the better - a pharmacist could recommend some for her). Presumably, the cream she has is hydrocortisone (although it surprises me that she has been told to apply every 1-2 hours as most doctors recommend you use it sparingly and only on the really bad bits).

If her exzcema is really bad, I can't believe a doctor was not able to prescribe something else.

Sorry this going slightly off topic Anna, but my DD suffered from severe excema too from the age of 12 months to about 3.5 years (just as you describe with painful cracking skin, and terrible itching to the point she would scratch till she bled).
I don't know what your niece is perscribed currently, but I would ask her parents to ask her doctor if he or she would be willing to prescribe ' Protopic 0.03% ' cream - this is a NON steriod cream, and we found it to be 10 times more effective in the treatment for our DD, and without the risks associated with long term use of conventional steroid based creams.

..the problem is in this country that NHS budget conscience doctors are very reluctant to prescribe it as it is a fairly new product, and moreover it is a very costly product, compared to the conventional steroid based creams.

I'm glad to say that my DD is almost clear now of her excema but I wish that I had never started using the steroid stuff as I am really worried about the potential long term damage of this type of cream.

Hope you get your problem sorted soon - sending your family lots of :grouphug:

The trouble is Joh, that children with severe eczema often have severe allergies as well, and often to the "base" used in the various moisturising and emollient creams. I imagine the Dr concerned didn't want to make the situation worse, which is why he suggested getting the cream she is ok with.

We went through the same problem with DD2, who still has problems at nearly 26, she was allergic to all bases but one.

hope you get everything sorted
and it is not spoiling there holiday to much :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:

Hi

Surely USA has an alternative? At work all the doctors use a BDF Prescription book. This guides them into prescribing alternative products. Surely USA has a book like this. The problem with continual use of steriods it ruins the skin condition. We use a product called 50/50 it contains parafin and is a greasy substance that we apply 2 hourly to the afected area.

Have they spoken to thier insurance company. Surely its thier responsiblity to help you get the medication. I wouldnt think USA would allow it to be sent via mail. I would speak to the insurance company and ask if they can see another GP out there. I find it hard to believe that they would not prescribe anything. In the ingredients they would be able to see anything she is allergic too.

Good luck and keep us posted.

thankfully dneice is sorted! I got the cream and dhl'd it yesterday so she will have it by 10.30 am florida time today.

she is allergic to so many base creas its unreal, and they have to apply it so much because of the deep cracking just gets worse without the moisture and its s0 easily infected,

but at least I managed to do it

thanx for all your help

Thats great news Anna, glad she will be ok and enjoy her holiday now :)

that is good news, hopefully she will enjoy the rest of her holiday.

Our DS has had eczema since he was a baby too he has a repeat precription for hydrocortisone ointment 0.5% and when he was younger we ran out while in Orlando we went to Walgreens and were able to buy some for $2 for a large tube same strength and i remember they had some stronger ones for $5.It soon settled his skin back down so he could enjoy our trip.
We are lucky he doesn't have many allergies ;)

Excellent news Anna - Glad you got it sorted out.

Cant Wait to try it myself!

Plus with her arms and legs healing sophies now back in shorts instead of long pant so alot cooler.

Oh and I am reliably told they have bought the entire mall out lol (see it runs in the family!)

It may be worth getting in touch with the medical insruance ocmpany, they may be able to help with it and may cover some of the cost.

Sorry too slow in seeing this, I am so glad you got it sorted out.
