Urgent:ECV issues

I see a definite difference between people who are being careful drivers of ECVs or wheelchairs and can't help running into someone because they walk out in front of them and people who cheerfully proclaim that they race through the parks, expect people to move out of the way for them and don't care if they hit people.

I have used ECV's in the parks for the last 10 trips. This includes DLR and DWR. Running into someone in front of me was something I had trouble with in the beginning with the old Disney ECVs that did not have good brakes on them. After having trouble with ECVs from Disney not stopping or after stopping keeping rolling I decided to get off site where I can be more certain on the reliability of the equipment. Due to limitations on this site I can't say where I get my ECVs from but the company is great.

I agree with toocherie on their being different types of people that get the ECVs. Until the recent price increase on the rentals, it had become fashionable for people to get them so that they can, and I quote Pete on this, "get ahead in the line for attractions!!!" I used to see teenagers (yes this was before Disney put a age limit on the drivers and actually enforced it) riding around on the ECVs weaving in and out the crowds. It has gotten better in the parks but now the problem isn't the guests in the powered scooters but the guests that are not paying attention and walk right into you from the sides. I have had people blind-side me while I am crawling in the crowd.

For heavens sakes how hard is it not to see someone on a scooter. Anyway i am glad that Disney has placed speed controls on the scooters they rent now that actually work. I had to set my mom's low when we went down last year for a meeting with my dad. This is a suggestion to all that rent off site and have the ability, set the speeds low on the scooter of an inexperienced user. Definitely helps keep them safe. Also do not leave them alone for the first day or so. These scooters are tip prone and are not stable on inclines that are taken at an angle from the side. Take ramps head on not sideways. I have seen several people tip sideways because they didn't heed the warning from the CM at the rental place to not take inclines sideways.

Ok enough ranting my part, I am turning into Pete here. Have a great trip.

I am very sorry mechurchlady for miss understanding you, please forgive me. I am not the greatest for writing, spelling and sometimes not always reading well. My mistake.
I just got me a Lark 3 scooter and took it around the parking lot. I started having anxiety and panicking at the thought to trying to drive that behemoth that seems to do mach 8. I was doing donuts and was like omg this is so coolio fast but at the same time could see control issues. I still have not figured how to get that behemoth out of my car and when I do I am going to take it around the block or to DCA and practice in the open areas.

Windjammermay, sorry for being so snippy. I just think people aer stalking me on this site waiting to find my flaws without knowing the whole story. It is hard being a neurovariant in an unforgiving neurotypical world.

Next time you are in DLR let me buy you a cheddarburger with fries then a large cone at Catch a Flave.

No prob. mechurchlady. all is good. :flower3:

Don't worry about your Lark, practice, practice, practice. It is all right, take your time with manuvers, in time you will pick up speed with confidence.

I was going down hill and picking up speed, my brakes were not holding back the chair. Well, I was getting quite the breeze up the bloomers buzzing down the hill. A cop came along side yelling "pull it over". That cop said he was clocking me at 10 mph. NOT SO.... maybe 9. What a rush :lmao:

You will be just fine when you get comfortable with it.

Laurie, did you find the speed control yet?
Turn it down toward turtle until you feel like you can control it. All will be good once you get some practice.

The only time I use a ECV is at Disney. I'm very careful and since I useually stay at the ASMu in Broadway, I practice in the "street" between the set of Bldgs.

My biggest concern are when adults who have young children by the hand cross in front of me at a moments notice. They just barely clear the EVC, then they have put their child in direct danger of my evc. I haven't hit any of them but I can get so angry, as I know how much damage I could do.

Once many years ago, my daughter and I were watching an outdoor show. We were standing, as there wasn't any seats left. A woman in an EVC pulled up and around us to see better. She had a cast on, so I realise she wasn't use to driving an EVC. There was a part of the show where the audiance gets splashed with water. When the woman realised the water was coming, she started backing up fast, and ran over my daughter's sandled foot. She kept on going (Like a hit and run!) while my daughter was crying and bleeding. She still has a scare from that.

I found it and already used it last night to bring in the soda pop. I will have to get a trailer or little carrier for it and it will not fit in the house. I am getting bus passes for county and city.

I have never had an ECV go that fast.

I was wondering if anyone knows of a place that rents ECVs for the week?
We are flying in and Staying at PoP for a week. My FIL has a hard time walking (bad knees & back) and rented an ECV last time we went. It was the best thing he ever did. But at $45 a day I'm wondering if would be better to rent from a private company.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I rent from Buena Vista Scooters which is on-site at the Boardwalk.

Other companies people have used are Walker's and Randy's. I believe they all have websites if you do a google search or one of the stickys (#4 maybe) has info.

Have a great time!
