Something similar happened to us years ago too.
Lessons learned:
Always ask a CM (preferably a manager) in that immediate area where you want to purchase the item.
And if you don't think the answer is correct, they just probably don't know or understand. Ask another, perferably another manager.
(So far a manager near the area has not steered me wrong yet.)
As someone stated I too have to tell a CM I was specifically asking about the pin, not the badge, and explain the difference. They don't mean to misinform. But they do, esp when they have nothing to do with that area or merchandising, and have no interest in what you are talking about.
It always pays to read Dizpins, Pinpics, or the official site:
www.odpt.com .
Sadly, with Disney pins you sometimes have to be assertive (not aggressive as some) and you will learn patience! Pins teach patience to the nth degree.
Last NY Day I wanted the PI Jessica pin SO badly!!

I asked three different branches at Disney to find out what time PI opened that day. Three different answers, and not a one was right, and the time was HOURS off from each other.

(Ranged from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.)
I had to find a manager near PI to get the correct answer that was nothing like the other three answers.
I got that dang pin too!
