Hey guys, long time lurker/ non-frequent poster here!

I was wondering if you guys had any advice. I'm in college, and I live about an hour away from my mother's house. Today she received a letter (addressed to me) stating that I owe UPS $105 for two packages that I sent to Washington in May.

Here is the problem: I never sent any packages. Not in May and not to Washington... The letter states that I sent to packages via Next Day Air that weighed about 3-4 lbs each. I would never send anything next day air! It's way to expensive. Anyways, I know for certain that I have not sent any packages anywhere in at least five months.

I think this might be a scam because 1. It was sent to my mothers house (I changed the address on my debit and credit card about a year ago. 2. The zip code it says "I" used isn't even a zip code in my state and 3. I go by my middle name and never, ever put my first name on anything. But, this says that "I" used my first name. What do you guys think? Scam? I'm waiting for my mom to mail me the letter so I can get all the details. I just need some opinions! I'm freaking out.

Also, I checked my credit report and everything on that seems fine...

SCAM! My guess is they will tell you to call to try to get your CC number. Throw it away.

I say SCAM but do not throw the letter away. I would take it to UPS and allow someone in charge to see it so they know what is happening.

Obvious scam. You pay BEFORE they will ship the package.

The only way you would not pay before shipping a package is if you had a UPS account or you place your debit/credit card number on the shipping document. Wait till you get the letter and call and speak with UPS. They can transfer you to a fraud division if the charge is indeed not your charge. They can also credit the charge with no problem.

thats not always true, they have something that collects from the receiving party... but i would assume they would collect immediately if the party was a private residence...

id call UPS and ask to see whats up.

My mom got a similar letter. Have your mother take it to the closest post office. It's a scam.

When you set up for UPS shipping, an option is to bill the recipient but the recipient must have a UPS account and you have to enter the account ID on the shipping order.

Thanks for all the info! I should receive the letter from my mom in the mail tomorrow.

What's strange is I haven't even stepped into a UPS facility in at least 6 months. I don't have any type of account with UPS and I don't know anyone that does either....

Weird it isn't it?

Hubby is retired from UPS. The shipper pays UPS BEFORE a package is shipped. He worked the Customer Counter for 20 years.

Call 1 - 800 - PICK - UPS and ask for Customer Service. They will help you.

Not really weird, this happens to everyone. Not necessarily this exact scam, but at one point (probably more) you are going to be a target of a scam. Just be thankful that you had the sense to figure something wasn't right, because some people don't.
Definitely report it to UPS, I'm sure their fraud dept takes this stuff seriously.

Call UPS and ask if you really want to know. DO NOT call any number on the letter you received. Look up the number for UPS (there was an 800 number given on this thread).
