Upgrading to business with FF points - QANTAS

MIL was trying to buy economy tickets and then upgrading to business with FF points. She was told over the phone that she can apply for it but won't know if she is successful until the day of flying. This sounds a bit weird to me but I haven't had the luxury of being able to upgrade to business before so I wouldn't know what the norm. Hoping you travel bugs can help verify or disprove this info.

We bought on sale tickets and dh checked to see if we could upgrade with ff's but we can't, so I can't help you.

I haven't actually done the upgrade with ff points, have only done whole tickets with ff, but have looked into it for interests sake.

Yes you do apply for it and if it's available last minute then you find out up to 5 hours before flying. If you don't end up getting the upgrade then they don't take the points at least. But it's a bit annoying not knowing so far out. I guess they like to leave the seats available for purchase for those willing to pay and then at the last minute, fill them up with upgrades.

They also upgrade by priority of your ff membership too, so if a gold member applies 24 hrs in advance and you are a silver ff and you applied 90 days out then the gold member will get the seats first.

I've applied for an upgrade before and didn't get it, it depends on whether they can actually sell the seat. However, we've had great success booking including booking premium economy MEL-LAX, booking Perth-Bali-return, and many domestic flights (find these the easiest). Although, we have been upgraded before without points sometimes told at the gate! other times a week before (the premium economy was upgraded to business class seating )

We too find Qantas FF useless Shushh and Travel Mum, but here in Aust we don't have a lot of choice do we. It nearly drives me mad trying to work out how to get the flights we want using the points. Trying to use them in school holidays is impossible unless you book them as soon as they become available. We have just booked business class seats using points for the school holidays next September. Now thats a spur of the moment holiday for you! lol
