Upgrading ticket to higher tier requires purchase of another ticket???

I want to make sure that this nonsense is correct. I have a tier 2 one day ticket. I want to make a reservation for a tier 4 day. The ONLY way I can do this is by going to a guest relations location and paying the additional cost in person. All of the guest relations locations listed on the Disney website are inside the parks. So, in order to upgrade my ticket I have to buy another ticket?

If you want to do it before you go, I believe that is correct. If you want to upgrade your current ticket at the booth, then no, you don't have to buy another ticket.

Ok, so this can be done at the ticket booth in the promenade. But there's no way to do it over the phone? This just seems bananas to me!

Correct. I think what you can do is buy the higher priced ticket and get refunded on the lower priced one, but not sure if DL still does that

I did this over the phone recently. I had to purchase the higher tier ticket right there while on the phone with the cast member in order for them to refund the other one I had. I saw the refund in about 6 weeks.

I even did it over the app chat. Same procedure as TiKiTikiFan said, had to give order number and refund was processed.
