while we were at the park last week, we upgraded one adult ticket from a 4 day base ticket to a 5 day base ticket. I thought I had read that you would just pay the cost of the difference between the two...I was charged $46...does that seem right?!

My original ticket was bought through Disney as part of a package with room, park ticket, and dining plan. The trip was booked in September of 2017 and paid in full in March 2018. My son was booked in my sisters hotel room...they had 4 day tickets. My husband and I and our other kids had 5 day tickets. Was told that we could upgrade just my sons ticket (not my sisters family) at guest services and I thought it was going to be the difference in the 4 to 5 day base ticket (like $15). I charged the cost back to the room and it just posted to my credit card for $46.xx

May have something to do with the ticket price increase in Feb. I thought I read something that you’d be required to pay the difference between last year price and this year, and then pay the upgrade.

I could be wrong, but thought I read that somewhere.

Oh I didn’t even think of that! You are probably right!

What the cost "should have been" depends on when and where you bought your original ticket.
Are they no longer charging the difference from current price? I've been off the boards here for a while and haven't followed since the most recent increase.

They’ve always charged the difference because the ticket you were trading in was the same ticket they were selling. But now tickets have expiration dates. They raise the prices and change the expiration date each year now. So, if you trade in an old ticket, you get the old price for it now.

NOTE: The date on which you BOUGHT a ticket from an authorized ticket reseller is not necessarily the date on which the ticket was "minted" (created) by Disney.
(The resellers sell from "old stock" tickets until they need to order "new stock" tickets.)
So, it is quite possible that if you bought tickets from a reseller/discounter a short time after a WDW ticket price increase, the tickets you have will be from the previous year's stock.
That doesn't matter if you use the tickets as-is, but if you intend to upgrade, it can mean
a higher price to do so.
