Upgrading room question.

People talk about upgrading their rooms at check in. My question is a 2 parter.

First what is specifically meant by upgrading? Getting a better room than what you had reserved and paying the extra? Or getting a better room than what you reserved and not paying any more?

Second, I'm sure it has a lot to do with the season you go during, whether it's busy or slow, but how do most who have done it do it? Casually ask during the check in process? Right of the bat ask if an upgrade is available?

Our situation, we had regular rate res for room only for AS Movies preferred rooms. When all the discounts came out, AP, room only, etc. by the time I got through on the phone, the only way we could get a discount was to take the standard rooms. Which we did saving $35 a night over our initial res. If their was a chance to get the pref rooms again that would be great as two of my daughters favorite movies are Fantasia and Fantasia 2000.

Thanks for any input

We upgraded to concierge at WL at check in. We asked if the upgrade was available, and it was. The extra charge to upgrade to concierge was considerably less than it would have been to just make our original ressie for concierge level. During check in, you just ask if there are any upgrades available, and your CM will inform you. Good luck, and happy planning!

Often, if rooms are available, you are offered a complimentary upgrade. You don't pay extra. It's a win, win. Disney makes a guest happy for no cost. Then the guest gets hooked on the upgrade and books it next time.

Often upgrades are plentiful in the less visited times since there are rooms available. People often count on upgrades at this time (AKL if noteworthy for upgrades--especially from standard rooms). But to play it safe, if you really want a certain room category, book the room and don't let not getting upgraded spoil a vacation.

dpic is absolutely correct. If you expect nothing, then it's great when you're upgraded. I've been upgraded several times and never asked for any of them. The only time I've ever asked to be upgraded (and was willing to pay the difference) nothing was available--I wanted to upgrade to a King bed at POR, but none were available, but I was ready to pay.

My free upgrades were at AK and WL. Unfortunately I was upgraded 3 times at WL, then when I went this July I was not upgraded, and found that to be a let down. While I never expected it, I guess I got spoiled on the previous trips.

so there could be a chance i could be upgraded? All i have to do is ask?

to Verchad, we stayed at the asmovies last summer. We got the dalmation bldg, the one to the right of fantasia. It was actually closer to the main bldg, like a couple of min. but we were right beside fantasia, and you dont have to pay extra $$$$. its still great cause when you are in the pool you can see part of fantasia.

.... for an upgrade? Do you just ask, "Are there any upgrades available?" or "I would like an upgrade if there is one available?" ?????? Do you just ask, or do you suggest they check further????

I sound like I'm joking there, but I'm serious. I have a problem with forgetting what I'm going to say (even if I write it down), and when I get up there to say it, there's no telling what will come out (instead of the confident, "guest-in-the-know"). Then I spend the next 10 minutes trying to explain myself ---argh!!!!!!

Simply ask "Are there any upgrades available?" when you check-in. If I'm interested at check-in, I'll ask that after I hand over my credit card. If there's a charge, the CM will advise you of that; otherwise, it MIGHT be complimentary.

But as others have said, don't count on this happening, especially if you are visiting during a busy period. Upgrades depend on availability during your entire stay. That said, it never hurts to ask.

I think it is a magical moment when and IF you get an upgrade...

it happened to us once at BC, we booked standard view and at check in I asked politley if there was a chance that our room not have a view of parking lot and a balcony if possible and after working for a view moments the CM says here is your room number and I think you will be pleased with the view...it was a perfect full balcony with water view, best room we have ever had (free upgrade)

pays to be polite and early I think:D

I'm going in 14 more days. Is it busy then, do i have a chance for an upgrade? I just had surgery a couple of months ago and my leg is still bothering me. I hope they can give up an upgrade closer to the pool. I know don't count on it. I already paid for the full amount on our room. Does that matter?

I'm loving this thread :)
And I'm glad y'all spelled it out for me; things like this get me pretty anxious and if I don't know exactly what to say to request who knows what will eventually be blurted out.

BTW, does the phrase ever work outside of Disney :) ? :)

Does anyone know if there is a correlation between having already paid in full and paying on arrival as to whether you will get a free upgrade? (ie. It would be easier to charge an upgrade fee when someone is about to hand you their credit card.)

Also, after you have asked for an upgrade then when they say "Yes, for $XXX.XX" and you don't want to pay, how do you politely saying "No thanks, while I would like an upgrade I am to cheap to pay for what I am asking for."

DW and I just reurned from WL. First of all let me say if you don't love WL check with your physician because something is very wrong with you. This was our 7th trip and it doesn't get any better. More on topic, we were upgraded from a standard view to a woods view. I learned that I would never pay extra for a woods view. Our upgrade was because of sparse crowds due to Ivan's near miss.

No. I think the upgrades people are talking about are the free type. I wouldn't have moved if it wasn't free. We spend so little time in our room that except for the fireworks or maybe the savannah at AKL room location or view isn't very important to me.

Wonder how the first 2 weeks of October are going to be for crowds and AKL. We have a standard pool view but would love a savannah view.

FFerret! I love your "tag" about the "happy ferret dance!" :jumping2: :jumping4: :jumping2: Funny, but I read that before I even noticed your screen name!
