Upgrading flights with virgin flying club miles

Just wondered, has anyone done this before? My dw and I have enough miles to upgrade to premium economy, or if we buy a few thousand more miles each, to upper class.

Really, I'm just curious how easy this is to do, and if anyone has experience in doing it?

The biggest issue is you have buy an upgradable fare which are not the cheapest ones and there needs to be the reward seats to upgrade to.

ETA checked our December flights our sale fares were £1085 each - the cheapest upgradable E fare is £1020!

Most people agree that it's only worth it to get into Upper Class as it's cheaper to buy PE tickets in almost every case. Not saying you might not find a bargain but it's rare to save money.

What we did is wait and wait and wait until we had 250000 this year and booked the whole family in PE all for miles for summer and only paid taxes and APD (which is still a large amount to be honest but got us PE for around 350 each.

We've bought the upgradable PE tickets before and upgraded them to Upper Class.

It's not as good a deal as you'd think as the upgradable tix are considerably more expensive than the non-upgradable ones, but it was cheaper than buying UC tix direct (think we saved about £1000 between the two of us, so nothing to sniff at).

The biggest problem is getting the availability. Flights to MCO are almost impossible, even in 'off season'. We ended up flying into Miami and driving up from there and it's not a short drive.
