Hello All - I was wondering if any of my fellow DisBoarders had ever been able to upgrade to a concierge level room at check in? I know there are fewer rooms so they go quickly, but I was wondering if anyone had been successful and how much they paid/saved by upgrading at check in rather than booking it in advance. Any info would be helpful!!!

Thanks and have a great long weekend everyone!!!

Great question... my hubby just asked the same thing!!! Let's see if we get any replies...... :bounce:

We were on a 7 day Western last May and asked about upgrades at port. The only one available was to a cat 3. We had booked a cat 11, been upgraded to a cat 8 prior to sailing. I think it was around $1600 for the 3 of us - 2 adults, 1 - 6 yr old. Somebody did wind up taking it and I upgraded to their cat 5 room for $358. HTH.

We just upgraded on the May 23 Wonder from a cat. 5 to a cat. 3. They said it was very unusual for a cat. 3 to become available, someone had cancelled at the last minute. After you are checked in you go to the desk at the end of the check in row, by the line at the big yellow mouse ears. If there are any upgrades available they go by a standard upgrade chart in order to determine the price of the upgrade. We were already in a cat. 5, so to go from a 5 to a 4 was $298.00, then a 4 to 3 was an additional $598.00, a total of $896.00. WORTH EVERY PENNY! Huge room, concierge service, two full bathrooms, etc... (not like what is referred to as two bathrooms in a cat. 5, these were two large bathrooms on opposite ends of the suite.) So the price is determined by how many categories you have to move up. It did take them until about 5:00pm to locate all our luggage at our old room and get it to our new room, but so what!
Also, we more than doubled the recommended tip for the stateroom host because the room was more than double the size of a regular room and had two full bathrooms to keep clean. Rudy did a fabulous job!

My question: with the repo cruises next year, which have HUGE waitlists for the Cat 1,2 and 3 staterooms - if there are any "last minute cancellations" (i.e. with the last week before the cruise) will DCL bother to go to the wait list to upgrade some one that late in the game??

I am assuming everyone that wait listed is actually in another category right now "hoping" to get the concierge level category they wanted (so they'll already be on the ship and paid in full for the category they're currently in)....

So if someone cancels the night before the cruise in a cat 3, will they exhaust the wait list before they let anyone else try to upgrade to those categories???

I agree that the available suite would have to go to someone already on the cruise. I think they would most likely give it to the first person who asked and was willing to pay for it. It would be almost impossible to contact anyone on the waitlist the night before..or page someone at the check-in desk. Thats just my guess though! Wouldn't that be the best..getting an discounted upgrade at the port for such a unique cruise?
