Upgrades

I have reservations for a 1 bedroom in Sept. and was curious when I check in to see if they upgrade to a 2 bedroom if they are available for no additional points. I know they will do this type of thing on cruises if the room was going un-occuppied. If it is worthwhile to ask I will, but if there is not chance I will not even bring up the subject.

Upgrades at DVC are far less likely than on a cruise ship or even other Disney resorts. You will be upgraded to a 2 BR only if there is problem with your 1 BR unit and no other 1 BR unit is available. DVC will not upgrade a 1 BR to a 2 BR just because it is unoccupied.

DVC resorts are designed to be filled to full occupancy most of the year and thus, there usually are very few unoccupied units. The least popular units tend to be 1BRs, so if any are empty, it would probably be a 1 BR. -- Suzanne

A couple years ago my wife and I booked a studio in Hilton Head, it was a cash reservation as we were not yet members. To our surprise we were upgraded to a 1 bedroom. We were not even told that we were being upgraded.

Some cruises do upgrade for free, but Disney doesn't. Even if you upgrade at the terminal on the day of your sailing you will be charged. It will be less than if you had booked the higher category originally, but you will still be charged. They do sometimes upgrade for free when a category is oversold, but even that is rare.

As for the original question...We've owned our DVC contracts for 10 years and have vacationed at least twice per year since then (often more). We have never been upgraded and have always gotten the exact type of unit we reserved.
