Just wondering, what are the chances of asking and receiving an upgrade? We will be heading to AKL Kidani Standard view 1 br later this month and will be asking for an upgrade if one is available. :yay:

Complementary upgrades don't happen unless there is a maintenance issue with your assigned room.

If you ask for an upgrade and you get one, you can be charged the difference in points (even if they don't tell you about it).

If the inventory is available you should be allowed to upgrade if you have the points available to cover the point total of the upgraded room. I assume they will cancel your existing reservation and rebook the new reservation, but that's just a guess. If you are asking if DVC is like a hotel where you can ask for a "free" upgrade, then I believe the answer is no. As the PP mentioned, they will usually only change your pre-booked room category if there is some sort of problem or when they have overbooked cash reservations.

if you are a renter, you probably just got put on a list where owners that see this post won't rent to you anymore.

free upgrades for DVC virtually never happen (except for maintenance issues as stated). for a renter to ask for an upgrade risks causing big headaches for an owner. (an owner asking for an upgrade just annoys all the other owners who wonder what makes this guy think he's that special...)

timeshares are different than hotels. completely different.

I believe you are correct Terri and the problem with doing this at check in is that the front desk staff is not familiar with DVC rules. The cancellation will result in points going into Holding. The front desk staff may not know that so when they make the new reservation they often take new points rather than using the Holding points. This leaves the member with a mess to clean up after the fact. People have reported waiting weeks for Member Services to get their account back in order after the resort front desk has made changes to their reservation.

OP, if you really would prefer a Savanna View room and nothing is available now, by all means ask when you check in. Then check your account afterwards to make sure that you didn't end up with points in Holding and that the additional points needed for Savanna View were taken from the correct contract (if you have more than one).

I agree...and I'm a renter! Just book what you want, that way you are never disappointed:)
