Upgrade when not booking a guarantee status?

Has anyone gotten upgraded when you booked a certain cabin # and not just a gurantee?

It does happen. I don't think you'll necessarily have a better chance of being upgraded one way or the other. If they over book a certian category, they could upgrade people with assigned rooms and fill the room with someone who booked a category guarantee, or upgrade the guarantee passenger. It's really random, and I think they like it that way so no one can try to beat the system.

The best advice is to book the category you'll be comfortable in. If you book counting on an upgrade it's very likely you'll be disappointed, and I don't believe you have a better chance one way or the other.

Thanks! I just wondered because I just booked my cruise for next December and I booked with 'Cruise Options'. The travel agent told me that with her booking a certain cabin # for me, there wasn't a chance of an upgrade. She said they only upgrade if you're a 'guarantee' status. But, she said there aren't any 'guarantees' available right now, so I went ahead and booked, but wanted to still keep the hope of an upgrade.

Yes....my TA called about 10 days before my sailing (after I had my docs) and said that DCL had called her to offer me a free upgrade. If I accepted, by new cabin would be # whatever, which was 3 categories above what I had booked. I said that it sounded pretty good to me, and she told me to just cross out the cabin number on the yellow tickets and write in the new cabin, preferably with a black marker. She also said that I had a day do decide if I needed it (I didn't!)

I booked through DCL directly and even requested a certain room. I still got upgraded and didnt mind at all since we went from a nine to a six. We still haven't figured out the method used to determine who gets them exactly, but just because you are assigned a particular room it wont rule you out.
