Upgrade to AP before I check in at ASM?

I am planning on upgrading a 4 day PH to an AP in order to get the AP rate at ASMU. Will this need to be done prior to check-in or can they upgrade tickets at the front desk? I will also be upgrading a 4 day PH to a 10 day MYW ticket with hopping. Is DTD my only option if it has to be activated prior?

When I booked my Room Only this morning with my AP - the CM told me I need to make sure to go to one of the parks first and Validate your AP before check-in...Hope that helps
