So for my son's upcoming 9th birthday, he has requested some new luggage and also a sleeping bag. I am looking for a good carry on size suitcase...21 inch and also a duffle type bag to use for sleeping overs, etc...He already has a good backpack and we also use a cinch type bag for pool trips, etc. so any ideas would be great.

I wouldn't buy a child's suitcase. Get him a regular adult suitcase. There are often good sales on ebags.com and at discount stores, such as Marshall's, TJ Maxx, etc. They sometimes have nice rolling duffle bags on sale at LL Bean.

My boys, and most of their guy friends, prefer a duffel style bag over a typical suitcase. We got them the largest carry on allowed size and they can pack everything in that. The oldest does have a larger bag for longer or car trips that he also likes. We rarely check luggage so size was very important to me. Youngest DS is 8, oldest 23.

Great idea! We are looking at the ebags rolling duffles and we are also updating all of our luggage in our family slowly but surely. We use the big ll bean duffles for longer trips but really want to start trying more carry on with all the new baggage fees from one of our favorite carriers!

If you haven't yet discovered the awesomeness of having four wheels, make sure whatever you get him has four wheels. They are a game changer! I also agree with an adult suitcase, just maybe in a bright fun color. I've always have great luck with my samsonite bags. They are pricey, but have lasted better than all my other bags. Just watch for sales.
