Updated: Will the additional aviation security measures now being enforced by CATSA result in delays?

The additional aviation security measures currently in place may result in delays. Air travellers are encouraged to arrive at the security checkpoint well in advance of their flights and should check with their air carriers to confirm the most appropriate time to arrive at the airport.

New: What impact will this have on the screening process?

Air travellers on flights to the United States will undergo additional screening, which will require more time. Passengers are being asked to be patient while these additional measures are in effect.

How much time should I set aside for screening?

Check with your air carrier to confirm the most appropriate time to arrive at the airport for your departing flight.

Will these additional screening requirements cause me to miss my flight?

If you are travelling on a flight to the United States, it will take longer to pass through the security checkpoint. Therefore, all passengers on U.S.-bound flights are encouraged to arrive early for their scheduled flights. For more information about arrival times at the airport or missed flights, please contact your air carrier.

How long will the additional security measures be in place?

These measures are in place until further notice from Transport Canada.

New: What is considered carry-on baggage and are there exceptions?

Carry-on baggage refers to items that a passenger has access to during a flight. This does NOT include medication or medical devices, small purses (approximately the size of a football or smaller), cameras, coats, items for care of infants, laptop computers, crutches, canes, walkers, containers carrying life-sustaining items, a special needs item, musical instruments, or diplomatic or consular bags.

Updated: How many carry-on bags can I take with me on-board the aircraft?

On flights to the United States, passengers are not allowed to bring any carry-on baggage with them onto the aircraft (see the question “What is considered carry-on baggage” for a list of exceptions).Passengers travelling within Canada and internationally (not to the United States) are still permitted to take two pieces of carry-on baggage. However, since carry-on items slow down the screening process, taking less on board the aircraft is always preferred.

New: Can I bring a diaper bag onto the airplane with me on a flight to the United States?

Yes, a diaper bag falls into the category of “items for care of infants” and is allowed.

New: If I am bringing a laptop computer on board the aircraft, can it be carried on in a laptop bag?

Yes. Laptop bags containing laptop computers and related accessories are allowed to be carried on the aircraft.

New: I am travelling to the United States on business. Can I bring my briefcase with me onto the plane?

No. Briefcases are considered carry-on baggage and must be checked.

New: Can I still bring my pet on board the aircraft as a carry-on?

Dogs and cats in proper carrying cases are permitted, subject to any air carrier approval.

New: Can I bring a book or magazine on the airplane with me?

Yes. Personal items such as books and magazines can be brought onto the plane.

New: Are small electronic items like MP3s, cell phones and GPS units allowed to be carried on the plane?

Yes. Passengers can bring small personal electronics with them onto the plane.

New: Will I be permitted to bring food items with me on the plane, such as a granola bar or a sandwich?

Snacks and other food items are allowed on the plane, however, liquids in containers over 100 ml – such as bottled water – cannot be brought through the security checkpoint. In most airports, you can purchase bottled water and other beverages after going through security.

New: Mace/pepper spray is legal in the United States. Can I bring it with me in my purse or checked baggage on a U.S.-bound flight?

Possession of mace/pepper spray is illegal in Canada. If it is presented at a pre-board screening checkpoint or we identify it in your checked baggage, protocol requires us to notify the police. This could lead to charges and prosecution.

Should I expect additional screening measures if I am taking a connecting flight?

These additional screening measures only affect flights to the United States from Canada.

New: I am taking a connecting flight in Canada to go to the United States. How many carry-on bags can I take with me on-board the aircraft?

Whether your flight is going directly to the United States or you are connecting to another flight that will land in the United States, the current restriction of no carry-on baggage on flights to the United States would apply. We therefore recommend that you plan ahead if you first have a domestic flight by checking all your carry-on baggage at the start of your itinerary.

New: I am flying overseas from Canada but I have a connecting flight in the United States along the way. Do the carry-on restrictions apply to me?

Yes. The restrictions apply to all passengers on flights to the United States, no matter what their final destination may be.

New: My flight to an international destination flies over the United States. Do the carry-on restrictions apply to me?

No, the additional screening measures only apply to passengers on direct flights to the United States from Canada.

Updated: Will I have to pay a fee to check additional bags?

Please contact your air carrier for carry-on and checked baggage limitations.

Updated: Will I lose my spot in line if I need to go back to check in extra bags?

It is possible that you will be required to re-enter the security checkpoint, which operates on a first-come, first-serve basis. The key is to Pack Smart and arrive early.

Updated: What can I do to help make the screening process faster?

The best way to help the screening process is to carry as little as possible through the security checkpoint. Passengers are not allowed to bring any carry-on bags on flights to the United States. Passengers travelling within Canada and internationally, are still permitted two carry-on bags (although to make the screening process most efficient, fewer carry on items is preferred).

Will there be any changes to the restrictions on liquids, aerosols and gels?

No, the restrictions will remain the same for liquids, aerosols and gels.

New: Can I still take liquids, aerosols and gels onto a flight to the United States if they are in containers less than 100 ml and fit into a 1 litre clear plastic bag?

Yes. These are considered personal items and can be carried onto the plane.

New: Why are the police involved in security screening?

As a result of the emergency measures put in place on December 26, 2009, Transport Canada has issued a temporary designation allowing police officers to assist with some procedures specific to the screening process. Police officers have training in search techniques and can help with the extra screening measures currently in place.

New: Are the police helping with security screening in all airports?

The RCMP and municipal police are providing support in various locations across the country.

What impact will this have on non-passenger screening?

Procedures for non-passenger screening will remain the same.
