[UPDATE2 pg 4] crash course in the criminal justice system; prayers needed

No new updates. Chris called the PD yesterday, but just left a message. They have not called him yet. The PD said on Friday that he'd contact Chris the beginning of next week, so, hopefully, he'll hear from him today.

Does Chris have any receipts stashed anywhere for some of the CD's? I know, he's young and probably only pays cash for everything. If he can find or obtain credit card receipts or cancelled checks to prove that some of the CDs were his, maybe this would help. Heck, even the snowboard. Maybe the store that he bought it from has good records and can prove that was his.

He's lucky to have your kindness and support in his life.

I hope everything turns around to his favor very soon.

My thoughts and prayers are going out to Chris -- hoping for some pixie dust to shower upon him!

I just saw this thread. My prayers and good thoughts for Chris will be added to the rest. Please keep us informed.

Chris talked to his PD yesterday. The D.A. has offered two different scenarios. The first: He can take a misdemeanor (which will always be on his record), serve community service and pay restitution, and it will be done. Or he can take a deferred sentence with the felony, serve community service and pay restitution, and he he "keeps his nose clean" for one full year, the felony will be off his record, and his record will be clean. The only problem with #2, is that even a traffic ticket can make this felony on his record, or, if his roommate has a party and there is alcohol there (they are underage) and Chris is sleeping in his room, that's enough for the felony to stick. I told him to take the misdemeanor and have it on his record. You never know what could happen in a year, and with his luck, it could turn out bad. I found out that the police officer who arrested him did not put any supporting comment about Chris in his report like he said he would. He lied to me and I am very angry about that. If he would have said that Chris was honest and forthcoming, and that he felt Chris was the victim of bad circumstances, the PD said this would be a lot easier. Instead, the officer said none of those things, and basically said he believed Chris stole a bunch of stuff and should be prosecuted. I am not sure what to do with this info. I don't want to make it worse for Chris by calling the officer, but it really makes me mad that he lied to me.

Well, thanks for listening. Chris goes back to court 1/5 at 2:00 pm. to accept the plea bargain, and then he is free to move to Keystone.

Ugh! I hate when a person in authority says one thing - then does another. If the misdemeanor doesn't affect his ability to enlist - that sounds like the best plan. (Can community service been done in Keystone?)

Yes, his PD said he can serve in Keystone. Now, here's another bad chapter added to his life. His mom sent him $300 for his birthday (10/23) and post dated the check till 11/1. Chris wrote a check for his apartment deposit on 11/4 and found out last night that his mom's check bounced. After depositing his paycheck in his account, he's still $63 in the hole. He called him mom and she said she's having a hard time too, and don't expect the money to be there anytime soon. Now he has no money to put down for his apartment.

It seems all roads to Keystone are closing. I am advising Chris to forego Keystone, and just enlist now. It just makes sense to me for him to go to the Marines now. It just seems that a winter in Keystone is not working out. I feel so bad for him. We gave him our 1996 4x4 Ford Truck for his birthday, and now he may have to sell it so he can have a place to live.

More prayers, please!

I don't know about the Marines, but in the Air Force, you can't enlist with a misdemeanor on your record. Plus, the community service couldn't be served while he is in the military.

I hope it all turns out OK for him - sounds like a bad thing all around.

Is there a reason that he was wanting to wait to enlist? I think that may be his best option at this point.

More prayes being sent for Chris and all of you. It's so wonderful that you have taken the time to be so supportive. What a difference you are making in that young man's life!

Bless his heart, he certainly has a mess. I hope things turn out alright for him.
