We've had the same bedroom set since we were married. Pressed board, full size bed dresser and chest of drawers. We actually bought a new chest of drawers and dresser about ten years ago. After about 17 years of the same bed, we decided that we would use our tax check to buy a new bed.
So, after looking at all the furniture ads, we figured out that within our budget, we could afford a who bedroom set. My only thing was that I didn't want pressed board. I wanted real wood. So we go to furniture factory warehouse and we see this set.

We pretty much decide on it, but want to look around some more.
The next morning, we see an ad for Ashley Furniture that shows this set on sale.

Dh really likes the price, so we go and check it out. It seemed to be a great set, so we sort of jumped on it. We paid, set up delivery and went back to see about redeeming a coupon when I suddenly look behind the headboard. It's all pressed board!! At this point, I figure, oh well, my bad, I should've checked it out before buying, so I'll suck it up. Last night, the furniture came in, and people, I can't suck it up!! The delivery boys were drawing on the corners with brown marker where the finish(paper) is peeling off!!

So, after much weeping and gnashing of teeth, we're going to return it, and go with the original set which is hard pine.
I feel so ungrateful and petty about this, but the way I see it, is if we're going to pay that much for furniture, it should be a step up from what we had before. My dh is totally not happy with me and thinks we should just keep it, but it totally doesn't look right in our bedroom. And between being forced to move because of katrina and all the moves we've had to do before that, I just refuse to settle for this.
Has anyone else gone through this?

No...never been through it but you can bet I'd be upset if I saw the delivery boys using marker to fix where pressboard stuff was peeling off!!

I like the top set better anyway.

I haven't gone through it, but I agree that you should return it. I can't believe the delivery people were using markers to cover up what is shoddy workmanship. I hope you get something you really like. FWIT, I love the first set. We still have the same stuff we bought about 20 years ago, too. One of these day, we will get the master bedroom redone with new furniture.

Dh and I have never bought new bedroom furniture for ourselves, not in 16 years. We're going to break down and buy a bedroom set pretty soon, though. You can bet that after we've waited so long to get new furniture, when we finally do get it, it's going to be exactly what we want. We've earned it!

I cannot believe that the delivery guys were coloring it to hide problem spots! That's terrible, especially after you had your heart set on real wood for all these years. It must have really disappointed you to see peeling laminate (or whatever that's called) instead.

I don't think it's too picky to return it and get what you want. Your DH will be happy with it once the hassle part is over. The first set is much nicer, with more detail, anyway. And if you keep this set for as long as you had your other one, your investment will be more than worth it! I mean, the other set is already peeling, before they even set it up in your house, right? How is it going to look 17 years down the road?

I'd return it. Esp after the delivery people had to color on it. It might be a pain now but well worth it. You'll regret it if you don't.

I like the first one much better too.

DH will get over it. Mine did when I had him paint the front of our old house three times to get just the right color! ;)

You will both be much happier (and count me as another that likes the first set better!!)

:)

Definitely return it!! The other set is much nicer--and you will be much happier! When that much money is involved, you deserve to get what you really want. Once the hassle is over, DH will be happy too!

I was liking the first set better anyway. There's no way you should be feeling guilty over getting rid of what sounds like junk and going with the better stuff. Good furniture will last you a lifetime. Press board falls apart in a few years.

You're doing the right thing. Even real wood furniture is cheaply made these days, on the whole, much less pressed wood, YUCK! Good furniture should have dove-tail joints holding the drawers together and the drawers should be made of solid maple, oak or cherry not plywood or particle board. Really good furniture is an investment. Even if set # 1 isn't top quality, at least it looks very nice and is real wood, and I don't blame you a bit for sending back the sawdust set!

I have that first set, but the bed only, and LOVE it!

I don't think that you should feel bad about returning it at all. If you keep this bedroom set for half as long as you did your last one and you're anything like me you'll spend the next 8 1/2 years wishing you would have gotten the other set. My husband knows that I tend to obcess about these type of things and honestly he would want me to return it because he would be tired of hearing over and over again how disappointed I was. You are spending a good amount of money to get what you want, you should have a bedroom set that lives up to your expectations.

I think both sets are lovely, but if you're going to spend all that money, you might as well have what you want. I hope the return goes smoothly.

And look on the bright side - you and your husband get to "christen" two new beds! :)

That's why I didn't buy our furniture from Ashley. They use our product (particleboard) to make their furniture so I knew what it was going to be. Plus they are difficult to deal with as a vendor.

I'd return the set too...and I agree with a previous poster, I like that first set ALOT better! I think furniture is one of those things you need to spend a little extra on. Especially if you plan on keeping it another 17 years! :thumbsup2

I agree about Ashley. DH did some computer work for our local store and they offered him 40% off any one item in the store. After looking around, I decided that even at 40% off was spending too much money on their poorly made furniture.

I hope everything goes well with returning your bedroom set. I hope you get the set you really want.

Sorry you were disappointed and hope you have no problem returning the set.

Just curious -- how much diffference was the price between the two sets? Was it a case of you get what you pay for?

It's about a $150 dollar price difference with Asley's being the lower of the two.

No you are not wrong, especially having to deal with the aftermath of Katrina. Your dh will get over it and you will be so happy buying the 1st bedroom set that will last you forever. Please post and let us know how it looks when you have the set delivered. :thumbsup2

You are right. It will feel like a big hassle BUT when the new WOODEN furniture shows up it will feel like victory!
