Doc, our 'little' Rottweiler, (well, actually Vince's Rottie, but Marie and I seem to be with him so much, what with Vince's VERY busy FF/paramed schedule) was diagnosed almost exactly 2 years ago, back in Feb '04, with lymphoma, an always fatal disease for dogs.
Life expectancy, with no treatment (chemo) is, at the outside, about 2 months, always fatal. With chemo, assuming it is successful, will put the lymphoma in remission for some period of time, typically 12 to 18 months. It will return. If another round of chemo is successful, remission this time is generally about half the time of the first. And then that is about it.
Well, Doc did have chemo treatment back then, went into successful remission, and has been enjoying life like a puppy, LOL.
For a vet-surprising two years of 'borrowed' time, Doc has enjoyed life.
He has been seeing the oncology vet every other month, getting checked to see if any changes, backing out of remission. About a week or so ago, Doc went for his checkup, and the vet noticed what he felt a difference in his lymph nodes. He wanted to see Doc after a short period to see if the swelling would go away or still be there. Doc went back today and he is out of remission now.
Doc got his first chemo treatments at today's visit, Vincristine and Asparagine. Next week he will also be getting Adriamycin, one of the chemos Marie also took 8 years ago. Two years ago Doc also took Cytoxan, another one that Marie had also. He will also be taking daily Prednisone and Pepcid. Right now he is resting, pretty beat from today's ordeal at the vet. The multi chemo visits will follow up at weekly intervals.
The vet again said that the second remission, which oftentimes is attained with the treatment regimen, is max about half that of the first. So, we are all in sort of a funk here again over that big baby we all call, Doc.
I'l take this moment to thank so many of you, who two years ago, when I posted a similar thread, kept Doc, Vince and all of us in your good wishes, thoughts and prayers. And over the past two years, MANY of you have asked about Doc, on the board, in PM's, emails, in person, whether at meets or WDW. We are all very appreciative of that.
And again, I ask you to continue to keep Doc and Vince, us, in continued good thoughts, prayers if you do.
Here are a few pictures of that big ole Doc.........
The first four are of Doc, two years ago, just around the time he was diagnosed, the last two are from about a week ago as he was on the way to the vet for his checkup............
Thank you,
Dan, Marie, Vince, Natalie
