I have done a LOT of thinking the past few days and I think if it is possible I am going to go ahead and sell my house (hopefully by fall) and rent an apartment for the time being, at least..

If DD and her DH go ahead with plans of building it could be a year to a year and a half before completion and we simply can't stay in our house for that length of time.. Too many things are breaking down (big ticket items) and there is no money to fix them..

I did some checking today and there are some apts. in nice areas that sound pretty reasonable - especially considering we only need a 1 bedroom.. I will probably have to sign a lease for a year, but I don't see that being too big of a problem..

Whatever money we receive from selling the house will be used for rent and then when and if my DD & her DH actually build this new house we will re-evaluate the situation then..

Aside from my DH's health issues, the BIGGEST stress factor in my life is our house and trying to keep it running so I'm thinking this will help my emotional health a great deal..

Any thoughts on this new plan of mine?

sounds like a good plan.
best of luck

I like your idea of living simply. I've been thinking about it
too. Houses require so much time and energy AND money.
Summer is a good time to move.
good luck

Glad to hear that you have a plan and that you feel good about it. Good luck!!

Jill....who lives like the Walton's every day.. ;)

C. Ann, your idea of an apartment sounds like just the ticket! An added bonus is that you will have to "pare down" the amount of "stuff" you take to an apartment. Then if/when you move in with DD/DSIL you'll have a lot less "stuff" to move.

Best wishes! :sunny:

I think in your situation that is a good idea! With your DH being so sick, it might be nice to have all the worries with a house too gone. Good luck with selling and moving :)

Hi C Ann!!!!

::yes::

Your decision is great! My parents live in an apt for the very reasons you have. My dad isn't doing so well medically and they live paycheck to paycheck as well.

The pro's

No repairs, no yard work, no worries about any of that. Big relief for them.

The con's

They had to really get rid of ALOT of stuff and they do rent a storage shed as well, AND have stuff at the kids houses. However it has been 3yrs now and my mom is realizing that the stuff she wanted to "keep" needs to go. That part is hard but good, if that makes any sense.

Good Luck to you and start looking!

Okay - now here's the thing.. I don't have a CLUE about apt. renting.. What can I expect (from the landlord) and not expect? What should I look for? If I get a place that has heat included, could I run into a problem where the thermostat is kept too low?
Can the landlord tell me I can't have my granddaughter there for a sleepover? What exactly is normally in a lease? Am I better off WITH a 1-year lease or should I look for a month-to-month lease?

And most importantly - how do I work the time frame with selling my house and getting an apt.? I can't move into an apt. till the house is sold, so when I sell the house can I ask the buyer if they're agreeable to givng us 30 days or so to find a place?

Can I ask for references from former tenants to find out how this landlord treated former occupants?
