Update on my limping/lame dog Nala!

I posted a while back that my 1-year-old Lab Nala had been limping. The limping stopped and started again so I took her to the vet. After spending a small fortune for x-rays and having the x-rays reviewed by an orthopedic specialist, my poor fur baby has hip dysplasia and will need surgery!

I IMMEDIATELY panicked because I knew I was never going to be able to afford the surgery. I bought Nala from a pet store chain and knew that she was covered under a warranty up to one year. I knew that the warranty had expired, but decided to call the pet store to let them know what was going on. Well, to make a long story short, the store owner decided to honor the warranty and pay for Nala's surgery! I am so happy! :dance3: I had no idea what I was going to do with my poor baby suffering so much. She looks so sad and know it's because she can't go out and play like she used to.

Also, she just started licking her paw so much that she's licked a little raw patch on it! Anyone have any ideas as to why she may be doing that? :confused:Has anyone had a dog that's needed hip dysplasia surgery? How long will she be off her feet? Will she be good as new afterwards?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Angela

No advice but i remember your previous posts and am glad to hear you got an answer and that they can help Nala without any more out of pocket expenses.

I was really surprised when the store owner offered to pay for the surgery. Nowadays, that type of generosity is virtually unheard of....

I remember your posts also. We just found out that our lab will prob need knee surgery ($3,200). It's a ton of money but I'd do anything for him. What worries me is the recovery period. Don't really know about hip problems. Maybe you could look it up online. I know I found out lots of info. on canine knee problems.

As for the paw licking - it is a sign of allergies. Yep, Baxter has allergies too as do my neighbor's dogs and my friend's dogs. They all lick their paws. Does your dog also get ear infections? That is another sign of allergies.

Lots of luck with your pup. :flower3:

Nala has had one ear infection, but that was some time ago. I'll ask the doctor to check and see if she is allergic to anything. I just don't want her to lick the spot until it becomes infected.

Unfortunately some dogs do keep licking. My friend had to bring her dog in to the vet twice last week because it (the paw) was literally raw. I know they have this powder that you can put on which seemed to help. But because it got infected he also had to be put on antibiotics.

I am so glad the place where you got her from will pay. Mine had both sides done. Mine was over 6,0000. But it sure was worth it. Recovery time was a little akward, as I had to be on her schedule to take her out to go to the bathroom. I also used pa play pen to put her in and not a hard cage. I will pray for her and the healing. She will be so much better. Mine was so happy. Jo
