I posted this once and it never appeared on the list so I will try once more.
We had our appointment in Ann Arbor today. We are both feeling optimistic and a lot more confident. We like the physicians. They seem to be caring men and what's more they are ready to DO something soon.
Wilgus will have a CT with contrast of the abdomen, a brain scan and a bone scan this week.
Originally they had planned to hospitalize him next week to perform an embolization. In this procedure, they inject the kidney with alcohol and fill it with a foam substance. This cuts off the blood supply to the kidney.
They just called and told my husband they weren't going to do this until 12/15 one day before the surgery. I'm hoping this is a good thing. They will also do an MRI to determine the extent of the tumor in the vena cavae.
The results of the MRI will determine how many surgical teams he will require.
If the tumor is still near the kidney area, he will have a team of vascular surgeons as well as the urology team.
If it has progressed to the juncture of the liver and the vena cavae, there will be the addition of a liver transplant team to keep the liver in good shape while they resect the vena cavae.
If it has progressed to the atrium of his heart, there will be the addition of heart surgeons to crack his chest and open his heart.
We are praying for the first option.
Apparently they don't do chemo or radiation for this type of cancer. If necessary, he will have immunotherapy instead.
Again, I want to thank you all for your good thoughts and prayers. It means a lot to both of us to know that you all care.
Surgery is tentatively scheduled for 12/16 with the possiblity that the embolization will be performed on 12/15.
