*UPDATE - HER STITCHES ARE OUT* Our cat tore her ACL ligament and is having surgery!

Thanks! She's being a good "patient" so far. She did walk several steps today and she's gingerly using the repaired leg. Her surgeon wants her up and moving, so we're starting slowly. She's eating well and seems generally in good spirits:thumbsup2

That first week is a bummer but it will bother you more than the cat! They are so adaptable to situations.

I also wanted to tell you that we give our "repaired" cat these...

Zuke's Hip action for cats...at Amazon.com

They really do seem to help with the joint stiffness and she likes them.

So happy to hear that everything is going so well !!!!

Thanks! I am going to ask her vet about adding in these treats. She is already on something called Cosequin for Cats which is a glucosamine/condroitin (sp?) suppliment. She is really stiff right now, oddly in the leg that was not operated on??? The repaired leg seems to be working just fine though:confused3 I'm sure that she's still healing, so I'm not too worried at this point.

I am glad your cat is doing better! We had something like that happen to us. Our 5 year old dog started to limp we took him to the vet and she said he probably hit himself on something and gave him pain killers. 5 days later he couldn't walk at all we rush him to the vet she try to refuse to see us but my mom said she is not leaving until she tells us what is going on. At that point she says she thinks is a neurological problem (and suggested that we waited a day or two!) we rush him to an expert. His nerves where getting pinched that is why he couldn't walk. There was only 24 hr to make the surgery from the time he stopped walking. The surgery was $6,000 and the recovery was over a year of helping him learn how to walk and grow muscle on his legs. He is now 11 and very healthy!

Hope all is going well with your kitty.:goodvibes

I am really worried that she's in pain so I gave her a painkiller tonight for the first time in about 2 weeks. She was back to walking really terribly today/tonight. Also, she still cannot jump and she is having issues with the litterbox. She is going just outside the box. I'm worried that her recovery isn't going as smoothly as it initially seemed to be. Right along I've said that I just want to make sure that she's not in pain.

My DH is being a pain about her not being able to use the new LitterRobot that he bought a few weeks before her surgery. I doubt that she'll ever be able to use it. Even a simple litter pain is confounding her right now.

We had to use a small litterbox and we made "steps" out of books for ours to navigate in. I filled it very high with litter too. Forget the fancy box for now...
It has only been 2 weeks so wait and see on the pain and give her the rx to make her calm.

My cat still doesn't jump on things and she had surgery 3 yrs ago and occasionally she is very lame for a few days/weeks. She seems to always be okay though...so give her some time.....:goodvibes

Phew! OK, I will make her some step to get up into the litterbox. I guess that she needs them for now. Also, good to know that your cat seems lame occasionally. I won't freak out so much now if mine goes through this also. I'm worried that she must have a lot of scar tissue forming, because the incision is really immobile. The skin at the top of the incision folds over the top of the incision now if that makes sense. I have no idea if that's normal or what??

Bring her by or call the vet if you need. That is part of what you paid for with the surgery...both you and your cat might need some followup advice!

It's weird, but today she is walking well. I gave her the one dose of the painkiller last night, and she is doing great today. Maybe it was just a random bad day, or maybe the overcast/foggy weather had something to do with it since she does have arthritis in that joint?

!!! Our cat gets limpy on cool/damp days(rare...in Arizona).

How is the bionic kitty doing?

This week she has had a lot of ups and downs. At one point she was again dragging herself just by her front paws, but the next day she was walking on all 4 legs again. The biggest thing right now is that she isn't using the litterbox well. She'll get in the box just fine, but will potty over the edge. It's causing some big messes, unfortunately. I hope that this will abate as time goes on.

Is she getting all fours in the box but her tushy hangs out or does she just put the front paws in? I was reading that it could be the texture of the litter on her bad leg or it just hurts to carry over the edge. They say to try a box with one side but out so she doesnt have to lift her legs over to get in.

Try a cardboard box with high sides just cut one side real low.

I hope she is back to 100% real soon. :)

She actually gets all 4 paws in and even digs around, but she hangs her tush over the side of the box. In her defense, she is used to using a Littermaid which has much higher sides. Maybe that was the only thing keeping her from doing this even before the ACL tear/surgery:laughing: I think that she might need a bigger litterbox, because she's going on the floor nearly every time.

Bumping up to say that we think that something is neurologically wrong with our cat. She is still crossing her legs when she walks, and she is becoming incontinent :( I'm calling her vet today, but honestly I don't have a lot of hope here. I think that she had neurological issues in addition to the blown ACL. UGH. I am afraid that she really doesn't have quality-of-life at this point.
