City Harvest is the first and largest food rescue organization serving New York City. In the year following September 11, hunger has risen 30% in New York City alone. An estimated 1 in 5 New Yorkers visits a soup kitchen or food pantry each year that's 20% of New York. Most of the families we serve are the working poor many of which are children or the elderly. These people often make the choice between food or rent. We rely on volunteers now more than ever before.
To do what we can, City Harvest currently rescues 45,000 pounds of food a day, helping to feed 195,000 hungry New Yorkers each week at more than 500 different agencies throughout the five city boroughs. With the help of volunteers like you, we can help to end the war against hunger. And with your further assistance, we can do better.
We have been invited by the management of the International Fancy Food Show to assist with a mass food rescue event at the close of their convention, which is coming up on July 1, 2002 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center from 2:30pm until approximately 8:00pm. We expect to collect in excess of 100,000 pounds of food with the help of at least 300 volunteers. At the moment, we only have approximately 100 people currently signed up.
That being said, we are in desperate need of your help. It would be tremendously appreciated if you could not only sign up, but also make your friends and family members aware of this event. I should mention that anyone that participates must arrive no later than 2:30pm in E Hall, Room 1E15, for a food safety handling training, orientation, team assignment and t-shirt distribution. We will be on the floor of the show collecting food immediately after, starting at 4:00pm.
Volunteers should be free of back problems and able to lift anywhere from 20-40 pounds. Be advised that Fancy Food Show management requires that all volunteers must be at least 18 years of age or older to participate. Pizza and bottled water will be provided.
This is a fast paced event and will definitely be exhausting work, but everyone is in it for a common cause. All food will be immediately donated that evening and the following days to several different soup kitchens, homeless shelters, churches, synagogues, retirement homes and more! The camaraderie, companionship and new friends just make the event all the more exciting!
This would be a great opportunity for a DIS Meet in New York City. We can get to know each other AND do some great work!
Please spread the word and help us to continue to fight the war against hunger in New York City! If you or anyone you know is interested, please feel free to contact me via email at rakin@cityharvest.org or by calling me at the numbers found below. I do ask that all participants notify me in advance if you plan on attending so that I may keep track of the total number.
Thank you so much!
