Sorry this took so long to post, but after your reassuring comments I called and talked to DS's teacher. The children will not be watching the war on tv for any longer than 15 minutes and no more than twice per week as it fits into the social studies lesson. He apologized for "over stepping his boundries" and was concerned that the kids would not understand becasue their parents might not talk to them about it. I explained that I believed that since that was day one he should have given parents the opportunity to speak with their child first (kinda like sex ed--you know they are going to cover it so you talk to the child first). From what DS said they watched tv the next day for about 15 minutes during free time and they have not since. (guess it would be hard to work into the curriculum for 5th grade history since it is mostly about the geography of the US and Canada).

Glad you talked to him and he appears to be sticking to 15 minutes/ twice a week.
