I read this article in my paper today and thought about all you unsuspecting out of towners going to my favorite place in the world. I-95 will be one lane in parts through Richmond this weekend as they replace a bridge. Traffic is bad enough without this - hopefully if you plan on driving you get a chance to read this and look for an alternate routes!!

Good luck!

Oh and it gets worse - they are doing the same thing next weekend too.

From the Richmond Times Dispatch
Traveling through Richmond this weekend?

Avoid I-95.

What's going on?
Starting Friday night and continuing through Monday morning, the Virginia Department of Transportation will be doing heavy construction work on Interstate 95's Laburnum Avenue bridge. With the interstate limited to one lane in each direction, major backups are expected.

What are the hours?
8 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday.

What's the work for?
The bridge is the first of 11 spans along I-95 in Richmond and Henrico County that VDOT is replacing in a $106 million, four-year project. Built in the late 1950s, the bridges are along a 7-mile stretch between Lombardy Street in the city and Upham Brook in the county.

What is happening?
Workers will cut up the bridge's existing north span, and the old bridge pieces will be lifted out by crane and hauled away for disposal. The new units will be moved onto the bridge, and the two cranes, one at each end of the span, will pick up the prefab units and set them in place.

What's my alternative?
Interstate 295, state Route 288 or Interstate 195 and the Downtown Expressway toll road.

Is this the end of it?
No. Drivers will face the same restrictions on I-95 again next weekend, Oct. 28-31, when VDOT will work on the second span of the southbound Laburnum bridge.

295 should avoid all that??? Of course more people will probably be using that.

I agree with you guys about 295 and I live here. Fortunately though, I live far enough South of Richmond by the time I get on I-95 its a non-issue.
