UPDATE:A limo for a 1st graders bday?

In this town, almost everyone has a party at some venue. DD didn't attend a "home" party until she was in 2nd grade. When she finally went to one, she thought it was exotic to go to a friend's house and play games at a party. :rotfl2::rotfl::lmao: Now she is invited to some "home" parties, but they are pool parties and even those are kicked up a notch. Nothing like the parties I attended as a child. The pool party she went to in March had a "goody bag" that had $15-20 worth of stuff inside. I appreciated the gorgeous beach towel, as I had been eyeing it myself and was on the verge of purchasing it. The bday mom saved me the trouble. :thumbsup2

I'd say $300-$400 is the norm for a bday party around here. But add that limo in and the price skyrockets. Plus, you're hardpressed to do Sweet & Sassy only (w/o limo) for $300-$400 because once you add in X number of girls, upgrade above the basic package, throw in the cake, etc. the base price is hovering at well over $400 and maybe closer to $500. The last party DD went to there used a limo to AND from the party and that jacked the price WAY up.

This year, I paid $15 per child to take DD and some friends to the movies. That included admission, pizza, drinks and a snack pack during the movie. I had to pay extra for invitations, goody bags, cakes, tipping the staff and a few other items. We came in somewhere between $250 and $300 and I felt as if I got off easy. No clean up, no nothing. The theatre staff handled it all. Easy peasy.

But I have one child. If I had 3 or 4, I probably wouldn't pay that much 3-4 times over every year. I try to set a limit of $400. Seriously, I place a value on having it away from my home and not having to clean up after a party. But I would not spend $800 for a party for DD. Not at this age.

They picked the 6 up at the school in a limo for the party...in front of everyone...I vote poor taste...
DS9's school does not allow this . . . it's actually in the school handbook! As for party invitations, if you bring invitations to school, the school's rule is you have to invite the entire class, or just the boys or just the girls. If you want to invite specific people, you're on your own.

I got a limo for my older DS when he turned 12. The place he picked for his party was at this trampoline place WAY across town, and there was no good way to get there and I felt bad about asking parents to schlep their kids across town . . . so I got the limo (strech Escalade - the boys LOVED it). I asked kids to come at 8:30 am and we had donuts & opened presents first; the limo came at 9 am; the party was from 10 am - Noon; the limo had us back home by 1pm and the kids could stay as long as they wanted and the last one left at 5 pm. It was an awesome experience.

ITA with the PP who said the limo companies are finding new ways to market themselves. If they are smart enough to figure out new ways to separate people from their money and there are people willing to put 6 year olds in a limo, then good for them for finding a way to survive in this economy.

A friend of my DD, I forget what grade 2nd or 3rd had a limo for her birthday. They picked the girls up and they went and had their hair done at the Mall and then had dinner I forget where. Needless to say, I don't remember the child having another birthday party after that. She also did a carnival one year - set up all kinds of games with all kinds of stuff to win (most came from Oriental Trading). She couldn't top those so stopped doing b-day parties after that. LOL!

My son went in a limo at about 4 for a funeral. He still talks about this as one of his best experiences ever. Limo birthday parties aren't big here -- I've never heard of one, but I can tell you that that limo made a huge impact on my son.

My daughter had a limo at her birthday party in first grade. It wasn't JUST a limo ride. It was a swimming party followed by a limo ride to Dairy Queen and the local park. It was a surprise for the kids, and they didn't know it was coming! The expression on their faces was just priceless. It only cost me $100and it was worth every penny. I even had a blast! That was the only friend birthday party we ever had for my daughter so I'm glad we went "all out."

Perhaps someone in her family owns a limo. If that's the case, that's pretty cool and neat to do. If they don't and they are actually paying for a limo for a 1st grade b-day party, that's a bit much in my opinion!

When I first saw this I thought "yikes" but in looking at the website and realizing that it's probably a freebie they threw in then I am not as "offended" by it.

Sounds fun. And I'm sure the girls will love it!

At first I was like :scared1:, then once I realized it was part of the package and it was pink I changed my mind. There isn't one close enough for us otherwise I would so do it for DD, even though she probably wouldn't want it now. She'll be 10 next year and is probably past this. :sad2:

I hope your DD has fun!!

I think we'd be skipping that party. We just do simple backyard home birthday parties, cake, junk food and let the kids run wild, play and be well, kids. Last year I spent maybe 100.00 tops, I think it was actually less, on the whole party and the kids had a blast.

You don't know if the family has an "in" with the limo company, either.

I had a limo take the kids and me to the airport when we went to Disney -- it was actually the same cost as a taxi, and 2 years later, my DD still talks about how great it was.

I think it's a great, creative idea.

We rented a Hummer limo for my DS for his 9th b-day. I think it was $50 to pick up kids at school and take them to CiCi's pizza. Our total cost was less than $100 for a party with about 15 people.

One might say that multiple, multiple trips to WDW is "over the top." I think we are all entitled to choose how we enjoy our lives with our families and friends. I would be appreciative and happy for the invitation, without judgment, whether I would choose to celebrate my own kid's birthday that way or not.

Around here, a party at a party place can easily run $200+. If renting a limo came into the same price range, I wouldn't see a huge deal with it for younger kids. Maybe a little ostentatious, but whatever...

I'm considering letting DD5 get pink and/or purple strips dyed in her hair for the start of Kindergarten next year. I've already gotten grief from a couple people about it (running about 50% for/against). I know I'll be hearing from other parents if we go for it, though. It's only hair... it'll grow out... not like she's gettinga tattoo or tongue piercing.

So, on the grand scale of things. If someone else wants to hire a limo for a party for young kids, then I have no big problem with it.

While I prefer simpler 'homegrown' parties I think if one can afford it and chooses to do it that's up to them. (Although the pick up at school is in poor taste, really just downright mean.)

But what totally gets me :scared1: is that it seems only one or two people on this entire thread think it 'might' be an issue for these kids to be riding around in a limo not necessarily properly buckled up. Most kids in first grade still NEED a booster, in many states they are still required BY LAW to have a booster. And I would be curious if this limo even has lap/shoulder belts.

UPDATE:

Well the party was this past Sunday.

Of course my DD 7 absolutely loved it and wants a party there now...

The stretch limo was pink with flowers and the name of the salon and phone # all over it!

FYI For those concerned it had seat belts and the girls used them.

The salon was basically just designed for young girls, hot pink walls etc. and the party was "hosted by " a group of teenage girls.. the guests got to choose dress up clothes to put on and sat in directors chairs while the teens didi their hair and added some "extensions" (fake hair) to each doo....and did the girls nails/light make-up... then they stood on a fashion runway and did dances like cotton eye joe and the new hannah montana dance.... then they each came out and posed in a "fashion show" and took a group picture...

Then the girls changed back into their street clothes to eat pizza and cake...

The Limo only went to the salon so parents came out to pick up their girls...

It was cute ..but I am not a nails and makeup kind of gal myself so it is far ....far from my style....

Another mom checked out the brochure and the package was $469 for 8 girls plus the birthday girl and the food/drink was not included....

( the next day we went to a party at a nature center , snake, frog and hiking...really neat young guy who taught the kids and sang...much more to my liking... LOL)

All I can say is, WOW. What ever happened to cake, ice cream, and a few presents in your back yard??? :confused3

I think it sounds like fun. A bit over the top, but still fun.

Does the little girl have these type of parties every year? I know many kids (incl mine) don't get the big parties every year. Once every few years because of the expense involved.

My youngest had a friend who had never had a b-day party, but on her 10th, her mom got 3 rooms at Great Wolf lodge for the night, and had a huge blowout. With food and travel, it cost her over $1000. Seems like a lot but I guess if you think about it- still probably cheaper than doing something every year.

I have spent close to $250-$275 on a backyard party. We don't do those anymore. Sometimes its worth it not to have to clean up after, and deal with everyone at your house, IMO.

My girls are 16 and 18 and I don't think they have ever been to a back yard party. They went to the Skating rink, Discovery Zone or other places like that.

I totally agree. We used to have parties at the skating rink and it was so nice just to hand over a check and have them do all the work and clean up all the mess! :thumbsup2

Wow, I guess that's a fun birthday party but for 1st graders?

EDIT: I just read through the thread.. and I have to change my opinion about the party- it looked fun and age appropriate!! Yes, maybe it was pricey but if parents can afford it, then to each his own, I guess.

Would I have this party for my kid? Probably not. But, I'd sure like to go!! :lmao:
