My son is being emergency extracted from Rome, Italy. He was injured and had surgery and they are now flying him home. His original ticket was into JFK so they must fly him back there but per the Travel Insurance but they (travel insurance) are required to get him home. We live 2.5 hrs minimum from JFK.

We are not paying for the service and have no idea if we should tip or what we should tip....

Any thoughts on this matter?

My thought is that if tipping a Limo driver is appropriate (not sure as I have never taken one for anything but a funeral and that was once when I was a kid and have no idea if they tipped or not), the cost of doing so should fall on the travel insurance company. Bottom line is they should be paying all costs associated with getting him home.

Thank goodness you had travel insurance. I hope your son is okay.

If he is being transported home from the airport via a taxi/limo service, then yes, tip the driver. For a 2.5 hour drive, I would tip $40-50.

I'm so sorry you guys are going through this.......every parents nightmare. Hope all goes well. If it were me, I would tip the driver....just to be sure. If he ends up being overtipped, lucky him!

I would double check with the limo company, they may include it in what they bill the travel ins. The limo company I use locally to the airport automatically adds a 18% tip and charges it to my card. If the driver does above and beyond I give him some extra.

Any chance they would cover your mileage to pick him up? For me personally I couldn't sit at home waiting. I would need to be in motion, going to get him.

This is true; good point.
