Unless I do a one way rental or rental a specialty vehicle (like a Mustang) I always get unlimited miles. I have rented with Hertz, National, Avis, Sixt, Enterprise (never again!), and Alamo.
I've rented with Alamo, Thrifty and Hertz and have gotten unlimited miles every time. As long as you're traveling within the state, most rental companies will give you unlimited miles. You can go to their sites and get a price quote. The quote will tell if you it's unlimited miles or not. Same thing if you're booking through travel site like Expedia or Orbitz.
Several reasons, I rent a lot of cars so I know what to expect for particular car classes. I rented a midsize and got what seemed to be an economy or compact. I complained but they said that is their midsize (thus the cheaper price I guess). Furthermore they push insurance on you left and right. You can expect to be asked no less than 3 times if you want insurance and each time you must sign to indicate you do not want it. The agent assisting me lied and sold me my credit card would not cover me (it most certainly does!).
To me the extra hassle and crappier cars is not worth the cost savings.
My preferred companies in the US are Hertz or National, internationally I prefer Sixt.
Specialty vehicles often have mileage limits too (ie. Hertz Prestige Collection), however they are usually pretty generous (ie. 1,400 miles for a week).
We have gone with BudgetAvis and a lot with Alamo and have always had unlimted miles. We already booked the van for our Feb 2010 trip and while on the phone with the customer service rep at the Alamo we are renting from she told us it was a good thing we rented it when we did because they were getting rid of Unlimited. (that was out of Muskegon Mich) Last time I looked at Grand Rapids, Alamo theirs was still unlimited.. so maybe it will vary by location?!?
