University

wow!

Here we have to only pick a 'major' a year in advance (england). But we have a completly different system. I am just studing History for a single honours undergraduate, BA History. You have to choose a specific course at one of 5 universities, and we have an organisation that deals with applications for us. Ours are all based on national exam grades, which come out in August, and we leave for uni that september!

If you arent sure what you want to do, take a gap year. Earn some money, maybe go travelling, get a bit of life experience! Don't stress about it now ok?

Uni is a great experience, i have never met so many new people in my life, and am loving my second term!

Do you live in the US?

I might not know your system, but why do you have to pick a major so soon?

Peace_Love_Disney--heeeyyy by BF goes to guelph!!! :rolleyes1

Jenny--when you're applying to universities in Canada you have to apply for a specific programme (ie; my BF applied for Human Kenetics, I applied for Theatre & Drama Studies) so you submit all your applications and they consider you for the programme you've chosen (you can apply for more than one programme)
I didn't get into my first choice programme, so I'm just in a general arts programme (which means I don't have to pick my major until next year)

But my BF, who got into his specific programme, he has a schedule that is tailored to his programme, and he has very little space for optional courses (I think he got ONE this year, but he had to use it to fill a required arts credit)

In my programme I'm taking mostly 'arts' classes, but I had to take at least one course in science & social science.

ANYWAYS, basic point: you're basically applying for a specific programme, which is what you'll be marjoing in.

how does it work in America?

I seeeee.

how does it work in America?

I'm definitely not the best person to tell you that. Especially since I'm just going to the local uni. It's similiar to your system, I think, but we don't have to pick our program right away. We can dwindle around taking classes until we figure out what we want as a major. Well that's how it is at my college. :)

Depends on the college I get accepted to, because of the majors they offer, but bottom line, I'm majoring in music education.

I applied for York U in December, just waiting for the acceptance letter now.

My mom works there so the University will be paying for my edumaction.. woot!

Luckyy! I was wondering, did you get any confirmation packages in the mail yet? I got them for my college applications, but I haven't gotten any for the unis.

Today my mom told me she hopes i only get into York so I don't have to live in res. I was like geez mom thanks for hoping I get into a program i don't even want.

Right now, as it stands, my junior year of High School, I'm planning for a dual major in French and Linguistics with a dual minor in Anthropology and Archaeology. Archaeology could very well be replaced with another language or American History.

trust me when i say...IT GOES BY WAY TOO FAST!

I can't believe I'm already in my second semester of university!!!

It's REALLY stressful and confusing to pick your programmes & apply to universities (especially when you have to do auditions and interviews!) but it's totally worth it when you get that acceptance letter.

Try not to stress TOO much about it! You want to enjoy high school while you still have the chance!

same here.. I 100% agree with you.... i cant believe im in college actually.. i still feel like a kid haha... but you DEFINITELY want to enjoy highschool while it lasts... i miss it so much.. especially senior year... i remember when i was in highschool, i couldnt wait to get out... but than when i got to college, i wanted to go back to highschool lol... and dont worry... most people dont know what they want to major in.. its a hard choice... at the moment, im majoring in biology.. that may or may not change.. well see

There's a difference between colleges and universities in Canada?

_____________

About my major, I'm not sure yet. At first I'll just take general classes until I make up my mind. Probably liberal arts...or maybe elementary education with a specialty in english and social studies. Or maybe something super simple. I'm honestly not shootin' for something real high.

I don't know. For the job I'm interested in you don't have to have a certain major (just a bachelor's degree in something) so I have freedom in my class choices. Since I have freedom, I'd rathar not make my 4 years harder than they have to be. ;)

yep.

in college you get a diploma, in university you get a degree (ie; BA, Bsc etc)
it's a bit easier to get into college than university, and they prep ou in high school based on whether you want to go to college or university
(in grades 11 & 12 you can take different levels of courses based on what you want to do afer HS, there are 'university prep', 'college prep' or 'workplace' courses)

Also in college it's alot more applied, hands on stuff, in university it's alot more lectures & reading.

what's the diff. in the U.S?
(if any??)

Actually yes, just yesterday I recieved my letter. Apparantly the term 'snail mail' is dead on, as the letter was sent on December 11 yet I just got it.

Well there's community colleges that don't go past a 2 year degree (associates) then there's the university that have associates, bachelors and masters degrees. If I'm not mistaken.

I remember being excited thinking about the future! I really cannot believe that I'm now going into my spring semester of my freshman year! WOW! But I have a long way to go before I'm done. :)

Good luck with everything!

So, I set up an appointment with a guidance counsellor because I really want to get my Major in Psychology, but at the same time I want to be a teacher.

Well there are specific requirements for the major that you want to go into. For the university of Guelph theres a general BA or theres the one where you choose what you want to major in.

I was looking up psychology and you have to start taking like specific courses and a specific amount of them before your second year.

Mhm.
And a lot of the colleges are like community colleges. Most of the stuff they teach at the one where I live is like trade skills and such. It might not seem like it's too hard to get in, but some of the classes only have so many spots. Like say there's only 30 spots for a certain thing, meaning if you want to be a plumber or what have you, you want too look better than everyone else.
And sometimes with the limited amounts of spots, you can end up in the middle of nowhere (like round here, if you want to be an electrician, you end up in the boonies of Nova Scotia).

I was reading the info booklet for the University of Guelph and wow, its like really hard to understand. I've actually decided that im going to major in english or psychology.

Im going to major in psychology. I want to be a psychologist when I grow up. I KNOW it for some reason. Like it's my calling. lol. but I love to help people. I would speacilize in children.
