I am currently trying to renew my expired teaching certificate. I have taken 2
classes at a local university but because I am part time I keep getting closed out of classes that I want to take. University of Phoenix just opened a branch near us so I called them the other day after checking with the state that I could go there for credit. They have a 1 week class and a 3 week continuing teacher ed class that I can take- both this month. The cost is quite a bit less than the local university. I could take botn online.

Has anyone taken classes through U of Phoenix before? If so, how did you like it? Any negatives? The one week class is on the US Constitution for 1 credit. It seems like a lot of work to get done in a week.

My daughter has her MBA from them online. I felt she did more work and papers than I did for my MBA.

I don't know about your state, but in my state I have had principals and superintendents tell me that they do not "like" U of P. In thier minds, they consider that not as legitimate than other teaching schools. In fact, one actually told me that they would not hire any U of P teaching graduate.

I would look into other schools. The local teaching colleges around here offer accelerated courses and refresher courses for teaching students.

Frankly, I would stay away from teaching altogether if you can. My state is way overrepresented by teaching candidates versus actual jobs. Many of my local districts are laying off teachers due to budget cutes.

Has she had any problem getting a job because of where her degree is from?

OP, I know 2 people who are attending U of P online and both do a LOT of paper writing. One is a accounting major and was really shocked because writing is not her strength.

I have an expired teaching certificate that I need to renew. I don't think it will say where I took the credits to renew it so it shouldn't be a problem.

Yes, I wish I had stayed away from teaching! In fact, I won't let my kids even consider teaching as a career. I may never find a job but I want to be ready just in case something opens up.

I am bummed to hear that U of P has so much writing. I am taking a 1 week course and have to write 2 papers!

My friends husband took some certification classes (or something) from there and he did not have any issues.

I have also heard it is extremely expensive.

Online education uses writing as the primary way to test a students knowledge and understanding of the subject being studied. I personally love online - no tests or busy work - just papers that explain what I've learned and how I've used that knowledge in my "real" life.

That being said I didn't go to UofP because it has a "diploma mill" reputation (maybe unfair, but I have to use my degree to get a job - so I have to pay attention). For the OPs purpose I think OofP would be fine. For someone looking for a whole degree program I recommend a "brink and morter" school or a "brinks and clicks" school; one where the some degree is offered on campus and your transcripts don't differenciate
