Universal Studios is 36 miles north from
Disneyland and 10 miles north of Downtown LA. So 45-90+ min drive.
Grinchmas consists of park wide decorations, a VERY large Grinchmas Tree, Grinch/Whoville Citizens meet and greets, tree lighting, Whoville carolers, and a special Studio Tour Whoville tram attraction.
Is it worth it just for Grinchmas alone? No, but the park does have a VERY solid line up of attractions that warrants a visit. The Studio Tour and Transformers: The Ride are worth the price of admission.
Also, you should be aware that Universal is in the prossess of completely overhauling the park preparing it for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. So expect lots of construction walls, very similar to what California Adventure went through a few years ago.
Here are a few photos I took of this years Grinchmas.
