We'll be staying close to DLR (at the Sheraton Park Anaheim), and we'd like to take a day and go up to Universal Studios. What's the most expedient way to do it, factoring in cost. Looks like it is about 45 minutes without traffic (and when does that ever happen in LA). We hadn't planned on getting a rental car, but we might if it makes it easier. Is there a shuttle, would Uber be reasonable? Any ideas/suggestions are welcome.

A shuttle from Anaheim is typically $30 for an adult without a ticket. I'd probably pass on the tours with tickets. You're also locked into the scheduled return. Some tours include tickets, but I don't think they're a good value.

I'd recommend renting a car if it isn't too much. You probably want to pick up in the morning, although you'll probably need to park it at night if you don't return it before a rental agency closes for the night.

Out of curiosity I checked the Uber website for an estimate for a ride from Anaheim to Universal City and it came up with $40-53 for UberX. That's not cheap, but it's actually less than I imagined it would be. If you have several people in your group it's actually quite reasonable.
