As well as staying on site at Disney we are thinking of spending a few days in one of the Universal Resorts.

So lots of questions:

Has anyone does this?
How do the hotels rate?
How easy is it to use the resort transport?
Is the express pass available to resort guests all day every day? AND am I right in thinking you don't need to use the ticket machines you just show your room key?

We stayed at the Portifino 2 years ago. The hotel was beautiful and the rooms were really nice. The bathroom was large and had a bathtub with jets. There is a boat service that takes you to the parks. It was very easy to use. You could also walk, but we found it to be pretty long from our hotel. The Hard Rock Hotel is more within walking distance.

When we stayed there, we could use the Express option throughout our stay and could use it anytime on any Express ride. I'm curious to know if that has changed since then. We just used our room key.

Hi there again:D Yep, we split our last two stays at a Disney Resort and then HRH for a couple of nights.

IMHO, the Universal hotels are such better value for money than Disney. They are onsite, literally a 5 min walk from the HRH into Universal Studios, or take the water taxi for a nice little trip.

And then of course there's FOTL access - magnifianct. Well worth paying for the rooms for this we think. It's quite a different experience to staying onsite at Disney, in some ways better we think, but that's probably because we prefer Universal parks (sorry all you die-hard Disney fans:o ).

You really do get better value for money if you compare the price of a Universal resort to a Disney deluxe, and really the room sizes aren't much different. Last year the room we had at HRH was huge.

There's also City Walk to nosey on around at nights, again all within walking distance.

I'm hoping to try the Portofino next year - I really wanted to go there last year, but DD and DH was gobsmacked I wasn't going to even think about staying at the HRH. I'd also love to stay at RPR, think I'll go check the rates now:sunny:

Oops - forgot to add if you do stay onsite at Universal, sign up online to become a Loews member. You get a couple of little perks when you check-in, but sometimes you can get some really good rates (last time the rack rate quoted to me was $280, I got the room with my Loews card for $160).

We have stayed at Portofino Bay once before and at Hard Rock Hotel twice. We also spent 3 nights this last New Year at The Regency in New York.

In the past we have always been pleased with our Loews stays and I've always been a huge advocate of staying onsite at Universal, but we were a little disappointed with PBH this time. We had been assigned rooms on the ground floor of the East Wing. The rooms were very tired and dirty (stained carpets, filthy windows and doors) and, due to their location, very dark and depressing. We are used to walking into deluxe resort rooms and feeling wowed, but we actually felt a bit shell-shocked. Neither room had a resort directory, there was rubbish in the bushes outside both rooms and no chairs on the patio of the Bay View room. The hotel was clearly very busy the day we checked in, but needless to say, that should be indiscernable to guests.

We tried to convince ourselves that our disappointment was due to having had a deluxe room with a balcony during our previous stay, but there were just too many niggles. The location/darkness of the room would have been a problem even if the resort was brand new, but we would have accepted that someone has to be assigned to those rooms. It was the state of the rooms we found unacceptable - both the 'fresh' dirt and the wear and tear. Dh phoned to ask if we could be moved. It wasn't possible that day as the hotel was full, but he was told we could be moved to fifth floor rooms the following day, so we were satisfied with the willingness of management to rectify the situation.

These rooms were much better as they were light, but the cleanliness and shabbiness were still unacceptable for a deluxe resort. In one room, housekeeping had clearly forgotten to vacuum. The bathroom was spotlessly clean, but there were hairs all over the floor which we found particularly unsavory.

The resort still has a very nice feel, but we felt that it is starting to look jaded. The upholstery in both the lobby and the Bar American is quite badly stained in places. We probably won't stay onsite at Universal again until either the existing hotels are refurbished (we visited the Hard Rock for a meal this time and it seemed to be in a similar state of disrepair), or a new resort is opened.

Oh Dear - sounds like you had a bad time UKDEB. From reading the other posts, it all sounded wonderful and I was plumping for the HRH.

Confused again.....

I think if you book HRH you won't be disappointed. It really does have a wow factor.

The second time we went I would say it was looking slightly tired but not enough to spoil anything, it had only been open 6 months the first time we went so it was still glistening then.

What about the RPR? any comments on that, we would like to stay onsite byut not if it looks tired and is not clean, may as well book another week in a villa for the slight price difference and buy xpress passes.

I wouldn't let my comments put you off. I am very fussy! Staying onsite at Universal is something everyone should experience at least once in their lives - the whole complex is fab and FOTL makes things so much easier.

We stayed in the RPR in 2002 for 5 nights. The hotel had just opened a few months earlier so everything was in excellent condition. We got club level rooms at a rate of $159 a night! We were very spoilt. The FOTL and closeness to the parks is a real plus. However the price now seems really high. This Feb we are staying in the Fairfield Inn by Marriott for 3 nights. This is very close to US and for £35 a night for a suite including breakfast it is really cheap. We are planning a trip for Xmas 05 and wondered about staying on site for NYE for 2 nights. This is because it will be very busy and FOTL access would be great.
