Universal newbie question

We are staying at RPR. Do we have to buy our tickets from Universal to get FOTL and early admission to IOA?

I does not matter where you get your park tickets. When you check in, you will receive room key cards for everyone in your room. These will not admit you to the park. You will use your park tickets once at the gate then your room keys at all the rides for your Express Entrances.

While at WDW this Spring, thinking of heading over to Universal/Harry Potter for 2 days. First, is that long enough? 8 year old won't go on all roller coasters. Second, we will be staying at WDW Resort. Is there a way to get to Universal from the resort or Downtown Disney?

Two days should be fine provided the crowds for WWoHP aren't too long. That could eat up a huge amount of your day waiting in line. Let me direct you to the transportation thread which has everything you need to know about travel between Disney and Universal:
