We are planning on taking time out of our Disney trip to go Universal. How much time is really needed and do we need to go to both parks? We have 4 kids with ages ranging from 5 - 22. Any advice is appreciated!

I'd say it really depends on when you go and if you have express passes. In an ideal situation (lower crowds, express passes, arrive early etc) I think you can do a park a day. Otherwise, I'd say 3 days to do most everything.

knowing your planned date for the darkside will help me with your questions.

Dates would be helpful here. Also, the considerable age difference plays as well.
What would your priorities be for you day at US/IOA? Do you want to do both parks?

We have been there the last 3 out of 4 years. All In March all around the 2nd weekend. We have had 3 day park hoppers, but by the end of the 3rd day, we have repeated all the rides over and over. This is without express passes.

However, that was without having the new HP section, so you would be good with 3 day passes, but if you needed to, you could get most things done in 2 days. We are on the zippy side, when doing theme parks, if you are on the slow rambling side, you might need more.
