Universal Hotels and Front of line at Parks?

I am looking for info on the front of line feature at Universal. Before our annual wdw vacation next May we would like to stay one night at a Universal hotel to take advantage of the Front of the line feature at I of O. QUESTION- Do you have to check inn first to take advantge of the front of line or do we stay the night then check out of hotel too use the front of line feature?? Remember we are just staying one night. Can we go to parks before we check into hotel or the next day after we check out of Hotel???? THANKS...

Yes, you must check in to get your room key which is your front of the line access card. THis will entitle you to FOTL from the day you check in until closing of the day you check out. What you can do is go to the hotel first thing, get checked in and even if your room is not ready yet you will get your room cards. Go hit the parks and then come back and get your room. What we plan to do is arrive late the night before our reservation, stay offsite, then check in at the Portofino Bay and hit the parks, even if our room is not available. We'll handle the luggage thing later.
