Univeral/IOA vs WDW

I would never get a 4 day pass because we wouldn't use it, one day is enough, we MIGHT be able to get a second day of use out of it.. I would like to hit Universal this year, but from a financial side, it doesn't make sense when our kids(4 and 2) would be just as happy at Disney for that day..

We can easily spend 13 days at Disney, between the parks, water parks, water sports, Downtown Disney and the Boardwalk, as well as the resort pool, its easy..

My family has been to WDW before, and basically were obsessed :) Now my dad wants to take the family on a trip to Universal/IOA before we go back to disney, and none of us have ever been before. So what are the pros of universal over disney? What do you wish universal did that disney does? A breif comparison would be lovely!
Meghan

i do both parks and just can't compare them.
i get the best out of each based on what makes me happy.
universal (the darkside) is a different experience if you have been to only disney (the motherland).

i can't imagine taking a vacation to orlando and not staying on site at universal and disney.

i do disney first commando style. it is time consuming when you rely on the busses to transport you to places. also, the busses are so crowded when you leave the parks at closing time. so much standing around when your feet and legs ache.
universal is small and can be walked to easily from the parking garage or from the hotels. all three hotels provide water taxis and rick shaw transports and busses. yes, even hrh has bus service. many people go to eat at the different hotels and the UO provides the transportation to make it easier to get around.

you will find that the universal stay of your trip will be relaxing.

We are probably staying 4-5 days. Not all the details are planned out yet. But, that express pass sounds great, and i do like the idea of staying sooo close to the parks, that you can walk there. Thanks again for all your posts (:

i think that is very appealing. i do disney first and by the time i move on to universal, i'm thrilled. no busses, a quick walk to anywhere at universal when staying on site. my feet thank me for that over and over.....

if you stay 4 nights on site at universal, your hotel key is still valid for FOTL on the day you check out until the park closes.

JMO, but if you are planning on spending 5 days at Universal, you are going to run out of things to do.. We had plans of doing the same thing for 6 days a few years ago, by day 2 we were done and spent the last 4 days of our trip at Disney.

i haven't encountered that issue at universal.
i spend the first 2 full days hitting everything i love in the parks.
when i do the shows, it really cuts into the time. when i do table service for meals, it also takes park time away from me.
on the 3rd and 4th day in the parks, i can do repeats and spend leisure time in the shops and watch the daytime street actors.

i also spend a day at city walk stores. a lot of time at HRC as i collect the pins and their merch. i have on occassions taken in a movie at the city walk cinema.

also hit the resturants at the on site hotels and their gift shops takes up a lot in the day.

pool hopping is encouraged at the 3 on site hotels and that alone can be a full day.

doing the dive in movies at the pool takes up the later evening for me.

for me a 6 day stay at universal covers it for me.
i see you have small children ages 2 and 4 now. since you said you went a couple of years ago, your children were babies.
littles get tired a lot faster and don't enjoy the same shows that older children do. families usually focus in on what is good for their entire family.
if you didn't use strollers on your last trip, i can see that your littles probably got tired and needed down time. if you go in the heat of the summer, most people need the down time from the sun and heat.

i have been able to receive more discounts with coupons and AAA at universal than i have at disney.
disney gives me 10% off the room only with the AAA.
universal gives me 35% off

the only time i can get a discount of 10% at disney is at dtd when i use my disney visa card for over $50. The ap for disney only gives discounts for a few things.

universal honors AAA, APH, AARP, Orlando magic card, MC at city walk, the hotels, vacation packages,in the parks for merch and food and for buying tickets.

both wdw and universal offer the room delivery of your purchases when you stay on site.

I guess it goes back to the theory that one should never dine at a place that isn't busy, there is a reason its not as busy.. :)

That said, we have never waited in a line thats more than 20 minutes, but again we are very organized and planned to avoid it.

all resturants can have good and bad days.
i haven't had a bad meal at the darkside in some time. i have had some issues of the food not meeting a certain standard but i talk to the supervisor at the place and it is corrected and both of us are pleased then.

same for disney. i have had table service and counter service at some resturants and the food is not up to par. what one person raves about, another might totally disagree. all in a matter of tastes. therefore, i can't say the longer the line or the busier a place is determines if the food is good.

We are always relaxed at Disney..

This trip we are spending 13 nights at AKV , for us to spend the day at Universal is going to cost us about $230 for 3 tickets and to park.. So basically, it comes down to whether we went want to go from a 9 day MYW to a 10 day for an additional $6 or spend that day at Universal for $230...

i have figured it out differently for the ticket costs but i don't think you want to hear it.
the 2 year old would have no charge at UO for admission.

i think you have made up your mind and have no plans to be open and try uo again. that is okay. universal is not a favorite if you are an obsessed disney fan . the OP said she was obsessed with disney and is still looking forward to the UO trip.

i'm sure you will have a lovely time at disney.
when my kids were little we enjoyed disney except for all the transportation and the time it took by bus to get somewhere from our resort.
it just wore the kids and me out waiting on busses and trying to get to a place for a specific time. eventually, we did take some cabs but that started to get too expensive.
you gotta go where your kids want to be.
that's the bottom line.

when they get older, maybe you would check out uo at that point.

i have been reading the threads on the CB in the past and i am amazed at all the people that plan to do UO when potter is opened.

almost forgot to add, when you stay on site at the UO hotels, they provide free transportation to Sea world, wet and wild. you can even take a trip to busch gardens from the hotel.

Wow! Thanks so much for all of your opinions! As for 5 nights being to long, i dont think so. In our most recent trip to WDW we went for 6 nights and skipped alot of things. Im looking forward to taking this vaction slow, and being able to look at all the details and places like Citywalk and the other hotels. The family and I have been doing some research on UO and its getting better and better! I thought that since i loved disney so much, that i would hate my trip to universal. Its looking to be the opposite :thumbsup2 Im actually really excited for it, and cant wait to go. I now understand what you were all saying when you said that you cant compare the two, they are just completely different (in the best way!)

You will have a great time!!

Disney is great. Universal is great. They both have wonderful and unique things to offer.

When somebody talks about the "magic" at Disney, what you need to remember is that the magic lives in you. Disney is made of concrete and air compressors and people. The magic that you feel there is one that you create.

Disney holds the market on nostalgia, yes. We are all spoon fed Walt Disney from the cradle and there is no way to compare anything to that.

As for magic, I find that if I check reality at the gate of whatever theme park I am visiting and immerse myself in the experience, the magic is there waiting for me.

Vacation styles differ. Some people enjoy Disney in a "see how much I accomplished" kinda way. They can plan a commando visit and list off every ride, restaurant, and shop that they saw. Nothing wrong with that, if that is what you want. Some people don't enjoy Disney for that very reason. Nothing wrong with that either.

Personally, I love all four Disney parks and both Universal ones. I'm not a commando style vacationer. I move at the pace of my children. If they want to go to a park for 3 or 4 hours and then spend the rest of the day at the pool or whatever, fine. If they want to stay in a park from open until close, fine. I'm not one to adhere to a strict schedule. I usually plan one character meal that requires advanced planning and that's it. That works for me and my family. Our philosphy is, if we don't see it this trip, we'll catch it next time, so there is no pressure to pack it all in... no matter which park we are visiting.

Go and enjoy yourself. It won't be just like Disney, but that's okay. Disney will still be there doing what Disney does best when you go back.

You like to do vacations at Universal the same way I plan to, Mac. The first time we went, we went blind without any DISboard research. We did a day at the pools, a day at Universal, a day at Sea World, and a day at IoA. When we went home, I regretted thinking we could cover it all in that amount of time. We were so happy with that trip that I started researching for the next trip right away.

I discovered a LOT of things we had missed the first time around. So our next trip will be longer with three full days in the parks with DS7 and DS3 (by then), a pool day, a shopping/re-riding day and date night. Hopefully that's enough time to see all of the shows, attractions, and performers we missed last time without getting too tired of being away from home. I really love the variety of things available and can't wait to go back!

Well if you can get through your trip in the 3 days, im sure i'll be able to get everything done in the six. :) I think we are doing 2 days at each park, a shopping day @ citywalk and the onsite hotels, and a day for pools (not in that order). So its a similar idea

With littles, those wet play areas chew up a lot of time....I can see you spending a total of a half a day easily with play areas!

Yeah, I just can't see spending any less than five days total if you really want to soak EVERYTHING up. We're probably going to alternate full days at the parks with the other plans, but I haven't gotten that far yet. I'm still used to having to do obsessive compulsive Disney planning so it's weird to think of all the flexibility I have with the options. :rotfl: Your plans sound great! Are you going to Blue Man Group? We saw them on tour and LOVED the show. That's going to be our date night, and dinner at City Walk.

Boy, you've got THAT right! We had to skip too many of the play areas the last trip, so the youngest got shortchanged. I'm already getting excited about all the play area photo ops. Another thing that eats up a lot of time is walking at a slower pace for short legs, frequent snacks and cup refills, potty stops, etc. I don't see how anyone could do and see everything with little kids in less than three days. I'm thinking shopping day is likely to include a LOT of riding, playing and re-riding. If we can't do everything we want to in five days, there's always next year.

Tamie

As for seeing The Blue Man Group, i would looooove too. But im not sure if we can. It depends on money basically. We have had alot of vacations in the last year (Busch Gardens, Carnival Cruise, OC) so i dont wanna put anothe $150 per person to the total. Im sure it great, so if it works out thats good. If it doesnt, we can do it next time!

Wow, you sound just like me!

I've been visiting Disney World since I was under a year old so I'm pretty much obsessed!

But this year on Spring Break (4/12- 4/20 counting 2 weekends) me and my friends decided to go to US/IOA for the week because of the very reasonable prices. I tried to keep telling myself that it was nothing like WDW so I wouldn't get dissapointed.

Well the first day I just kept comparing everything to WDW since they both have similar attractions. WHile we were there US and IOA both closed at either 6 PM or 7pm which was disspointing. By the third day we had done everything in both US and IOA some things multiple times. So we spare of the moment bought 2-day WDW park hopper tickets and spent our last 2 days in WDW.

It turns out I absolutely loved US/IOA. It truly is a different experience than WDW! better? I wouldn't say so but it's still worth going to whenever you're in the orlando area. The main thing I enjoyed in US/IOA over WDW is the much smaller crowds and the more thrill rides. Whenever I was in US/IOA I felt more like I was at a theme park and when I'm in WDW I feel like I'm in another world. I also missed that special magical feeling I get in WDW.

thanks for sharing. i'm glad you enjoyed the UO portion of your trip.
for me, the more i go to UO, the more it draws me in.
it is more of a slower pace and relaxing vacay for me.
i start my trips at disney and end it at universal.

i just couldn't imagine not doing both parks when i go to orlando.

i find great things in both parks.

Yeah, we are on the same boat there! Im excited for the same things that you found out on your trip :) As for the "magic", like somebody else said, you create your own magic. :wizard:

Yep, The magic is created by the person

My friend just got back from MK on monday...he said.."magic" ? the park was crowded, long lines.... its more like a nightmare and i am never coming back.

we'll send your friend mummy dust!!

When we were planning our first trip to Orlando it was going to be a "once in a lifetime" trip, so I wanted to experience a little bit of everything that Orlando had to offer. Coming from Canada where our dollar was extremely low at the time, we were also on a budget designed to get the most bang for our buck. Luckily, I found the disboards and I was able to research our trip for nearly a year and I found out about Universal Studios. I decided we would buy the 7 day tickets since they were buy 4 get one free with a MasterCard. They were also waaaaay less expensive than 5 days at WDW!

We chose to do one full day at MK, and the Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party as well. As far as perception goes Magic Kingdom IS WDW for a lot of people so I wanted to see everything we could in that park. We didn't do ANY other WDW parks that trip. We also did 2 days at SW which we loved. So, we had SW, US/IOA, and MK. I thought we did a good job of experiencing some of everything.

Because we were so thrifty and budgeted so well, we were able to plan a second trip. That trip, we decided, was a "Disney" trip, to see all of the other parks, water parks, and Disney Quest. I said to my husband "How to we justify paying $300 for tickets to Universal, when we can add the extra days to WDW tickets for $13?" He said "Very easily, because I'm going to Universal!" Since then, we've had a third trip (I am really good at travelling on a budget!) and we again combined WDW and US. We do not stay onsite but travel during offseason and never have any waits at US/IOA. We usually visit 3 -4 times during a 9 day stay.

We like Disney. We LOVE the Universal Parks. For some reason, our best day on vacation is always at Universal Studios and our worst day is alsways at MGM. Strange, huh? As far as we are concerned US/IOA is the reason for our trip; WDW and SW are just other things we do when we are there.

In my opinion, some of the rides at WDW are outdated and hokey. There is nothing that WDW has (ride wise) that doesn't have an equivalent counterpark at either US or IOA. (with the exception of Soarin', which has no equal) In my opinion, the US/IOA version is more exciting, more current, edgier, and more fun. They are faster and splashier. That being said, the parades and fireworks at WDW are phenomenal, and I personally believe that SpectroMagic and Mickey's Philharmagic are worth the price of MK admission.

Each park has something unique and wonderful. It is okay to enjoy them both, and it is okay to say something is your favourite. What I love about Universal parks is that they have only 2 parks, connected via CityWalk, so I can enjoy all of my favourites in both parks in one day if I want to. Each WDW park has 2-3 favourites for me, but I have to go 4 parks to enjoy them all.

I am glad you are keeping an open mind about enjoying your US trip. It isn't Disney, and that makes my family very happy!

Also, getting to the parks is so much easier at Universal than Disney if you are staying on site.

You can:

-Walk
-Take a boat
-Take a bus
-Take a pedi-cab

It's not an hour ordeal like at Disney.
