My family has been to WDW before, and basically were obsessed :) Now my dad wants to take the family on a trip to Universal/IOA before we go back to disney, and none of us have ever been before. So what are the pros of universal over disney? What do you wish universal did that disney does? A breif comparison would be lovely!

IMO there is no comparison. Universal is better. It actually feels like a vacation, as opposed to wall to wall people and stressing out over long lines for EVERYTHING at Disney.

There is nothing at Disney that I wish Universal would do.

That's my point, it's not Disney.

When you go, you'll know what I mean. ;)

Universal/IOA should never be compared to Disney and if you do then you will be disappointed especially if you really love Disney.
Universal is laid back more realaxing and awsome themeing and if you stay onsite then the perks can't be compared and not so far spread out cause they are within walking distance of each other .

We were definitley planning to stay on site (:, so thats all good. I guess it will be good to try something new. Your perspectives actually made me excited to go. Im looking forward to the more "thrill" rides, and some of the themeing
Meghan :thumbsup2

You're staying onsite and doing Universal first? For some, that is a cardinal sin! :scared:

Just go, have fun, and immerse yourself in what Universal has to offer. Enjoy it. Then go to Disney and immerse yourself in what they offer. Enjoy it. Compare Disney to Disney and compare Universal to Universal. :goodvibes

Maybe the way i explained it wasnt right. We are staying on site at Universal, and we arent going to disney at all on this trip.

Ah. In that case, you're really going to enjoy yourself! :cool2:

Take your time, ride your favorites as much as you want, and scream on the drops! How many days are you going for?

When you stay onsite you will see what most of us are talking about
It basically spoils you cause you get unlimited express pass which means no long standing in line and since the hotels are so close you can take a break when the parks gets packed and too much more to mention :goodvibes

We are probably staying 4-5 days. Not all the details are planned out yet. But, that express pass sounds great, and i do like the idea of staying sooo close to the parks, that you can walk there. Thanks again for all your posts (:

We used to be Disney obsessed and went as often as we possibly could. Now, after our first visit in January, we're huge Universal fans. Here are some of the reasons.

1. If you like staying onsite, the Universal hotels are much better. Bigger rooms, attentive staff, and it still costs less. Your room key gives you a great perk; FRONT OF THE LINE ON ALMOST ALL OF THE ATTRACTIONS!!!!!!!!!! They really spoil you for spending the money to stay onsite. You show your room key at an attraction, and they show you a separate line with a very short wait time. Show your room key at a restaurant, and you get priority seating without reservations. If you're not staying onsite, you can still buy an Express Pass to get front of the line (FOTL) benefits once on each attraction.

2. Universal is less crowded than Disney.

3. Universal appeals to everyone from very young children to coaster junkies, and everyone in between. When we used to go to Disney, I always wished they'd think about putting more coasters in. Universal isn't flooded with them, but they have several spread throughout the park to give you that adrenaline rush periodically if you want it. And they also have plenty of fun things for little kids. Play areas with water for hot days, well themed rides, and shows that appeal to every age.

4. Our first visit, I was expecting the Universal theming to be a step down from Disney. I was pleasantly surprised! The art, design, concepts, detail, flow, etc. were just as good (sometimes better) in my opinion. It was really fun to explore all the different areas and see new things. Like Disney, they very effectively create completely different worlds for you to enjoy. Take a look at the Picture of the Day string.

5. Restaurants. Disney has more sit down restaurants in the parks, but you don't have to make reservations months in advance to eat at Universal restaurants. Especially if you stay onsite and get priority seating. And City Walk has a wide variety of sit down restaurants to eat at. The food is great! Even the quick counter service food that we tried (Louie's and Burger Diggs) was really good. And again, you didn't have to wait an hour in line for it. It's just easier to get really good meals at Universal.

Those are the things I can think of just off the top of my head. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know. :) I hope you enjoy your first trip to Universal as much as we enjoyed ours! We can't wait to go back, and I'm trying to plan our next trip right now!

Wow! Thanks for all that info. This staying on site thing sounds better and better! Im actually quite excited for all the different rides. In our group we have 2 coaster junkies, one who will get on some, but prefers tamer ones, and the last one who will only do little rides. All the vareity sounds great!

One of the best pluses is that you can pool hop at Universal. Check out the different pools, they're all unique!

Apples and Oranges

Disney is the themes and "magic" US and IOA are amusement parks based on smaller themes.

Try them both! Each has it's good and bad points but are both different kinds of operations.

I have had good and bad experiences at both parks but mostly good. Park staff has been about the same but I have to admit my contact with US guest services reps have been more pleasant and to my satisfaction than with WDW. But the folks on the ground have always been pretty good at both places.

I vote go to US/IOA! :thumbsup2

I have to say that after a less -than -magical trip to WDW in March, I am eagerly anticipating my upcoming trip to US/IOA.

I, like many, am obsessed with Disney. Our most recent trip was our 4th visit. Unfortunately, it coincided with Spring break and Easter. Even the fastpass lines were a long wait on some of the more popular attraction. In a word, my trip was STRESSFUL. It was overcrowded and we were always planning and stratagizing where and when we should show up to parks. We've gone during less crowded times as well and still felt that we needed to be advance planners to an extrmeme. Let's face it, that's a reality at Disney unless you're extremely flexible and don't mind waiting an hour for a table to eat lunch. We spent all this money, stayed onsite, and came home feelilng overwhelmed and in need of a vacation.

I love that I can go to US and relax and not feel like I have to be 10 steps ahead of the crowd. I can actually enjoy my family and my time away from home and that is priceless.

I still love Disney and the experience there but you can't go into a vacation there expecting to be spontaneous and relaxed.

You all are soooo helpful! Im actually real excited to go now! At first i didnt think i would like it, but a more relaxed vacation sounds good. We are definitely one of those families who goes to disney, and already has a strict schedule planned out, so this should be fun! Thanks so much!

Be prepared to be spoiled by the FOTL. The hotels have the most comfortable rooms we've ever stayed at (including GF), the FOTL is the best perk for my DH who hates lines and my DD who loves to ride all the rides at least 12 times.:rotfl:
