Unity candle

What is the purpose of the unity candle? Im from the uk and its not a tradition we have over here but I have seen pictures and they look good but I'm not sure what they are or what your supposed to do with them. Can someone fill me in please!

Basically a memeber (usually the mothers) light the 2 taper candles. Then the couple uses those to light the big on in the middle. Bringing the 2 families together.
