Hello all!
We are flying united airlines from Newark to Los Angeles, and then to Honolulu on the way to Oahu. On the way home, we have an overnight from Honolulu to Newark.
Has anyone flown similar to this? What can we expect? I am having trouble finding concrete info- our flight was booked by Make a Wish and so we do not have an airline contact.
Are there ports to charge/plug in electronics?
Is there wifi?
What food offerings are there? Paid or complimentary?
Also, what are the rules on bringing food? I know no drinks. I plan on bringing our empty water bottles and filling them after we get through security.
Thank you!!!

I don't know about UA, but we flew on Delta and I brought a small cooler lunchbag with Hormel P3 packs, a banana, squeeze applesauce, goldfish crackers, cheese sticks, and a bag of mini carrots. It sustained us through the 8 hour flight. We also bought water bottles once we got through security.

Do you happen to have a time of day you are flying? Most airlines have a route that flies on a regular basis and then you can get your specifics from that. For example, I googled United HNL to EWR (newark) and it helped me find United flight 14 which leaves HNL at 2:55 hawaii time and arrives 6:41 am at Newark. This goes almost everyday so then you can look at a website like Flight Aware which will give you the basic info on the flight
https://flightaware.com/live/flight/UAL14 there is a section on the lower right that tells you cabin details, you need to click on each one. The link says it is a Boeing 767-400 so you google what it has for power ports too. You can also go to the United home page and see info about flight #14. This is kind of a best guess scenario though, until someone from United or Make a Wish can confirm your flight number.

You can bring any food on that's not liquid. We carried on lunchables, chips, crackers, etc. We flew Delta which provides a meal for free, but United will have food available for purchase. I don't believe they provide a free full meal, aside from peanuts/pretzels.

We looked at United flights out of Newark and I believe most, if not all, are on a Boeing 767 as PP mentions. Wifi is available for purchase and there are shared power ports between the seats.

United only offers food for purchase, on long flights to Hawaii(which I dislike). They treat it as any other "domestic" flight despite the long distance across the Pacific. I would plan to bring snacks for your family. Also, plan on bringing your own entertainment as many United planes do not offer the in seat televisions either. We are flying United to Oahu next month. I wish I could take another airline, but only United offers a direct flight from Denver. Good luck!

If you're doing a make a wish trip have your Child's dr write a letter of medical necessity for any medical things your child used. This will allow you to bring it on the plane and 1 free checked bag for his/her medical things. We're flying from Austin to lax to hnl with United

We flew UA LA-to-HNL route 9am flight. It was much much better than I've come to expect from United. Great Aloha-spirited crew.

Flying back 9hrs direct to the Midwest was more so-so. Nothing negative, just a punch-the-click crew experience.

we just flew Chicago to HNL, 8.5 hour flight. The seats had power plugs, there was wifi you had to pay for supposedly. The in flight entertainment system was broken on our plane so I can't comment on that. They offered us $100 per person credit for future travel because of the broken entertainment...only good for 1 year though and we can't use it for food or checked bags so likely it will be wasted. We had zero food, they didn't even give us a bag of nuts or chips, they did bring around drinks

as for food you can bring on whatever you want from what I can tell. Liquids you need to buy after going through security or fill a bottle. We bought pizzas at the airport from wolfgang puck express and brought them on

I fly Alaska from Seattle, so while not the same, I will tell you that we never have wifi available once we head out over the pacific to Oahu. I asked about it one time and the flight attendant told me "we're over the ocean. Wifi doesn't exist over the ocean" I don't know how true this is, or if it's with every airline, but you may have a few hours (5 or 6?) where it's not available.

On our flight to Honolulu, during the last half hour of the flight we were asked to fill out a paper for each family saying we did not have any fruits/vegies/plants in our bags.

After going through TSA in Honolulu for the return flight, we had to put our bags through an x-ray scanner to be sure we did not have any fresh fruits/vegies.

Something to keep in mind when packing your families snack bag!

Bring food with you!! That is my biggest suggestion having taken several long flights with children (and even adults!). We bring a small soft sided cooler and fill it with snack items, granola bars, trail mix, gold fish crackers, food pouches for the littles, PB&J sandwiches, raisins, string cheese, etc. We have never been questioned bringing these through security with children en tow. If we didn't have the kids, we'd forego the pouches. Fill waters after security, as you said. We have also gone back to the galley to ask for drinks, too. We had a flight from SEA to HNL take 9.5 hours and they didn't serve ANY food or drinks for the first ~5 hours due to an unexpected stop and turbulence over the ocean. Expect airlines to treat a flight to HI as domestic even though it is a long flight (i.e no food for free, no first checked bag for free)

Most long haul flights have outlets for charging electronics. United offers entertainment via their app (probably some free, some for pay). We bring a tablet with headphones and a splitter jack so two kids can watch a single tablet. We also bring other entertainment like cards, coloring books, play dough, wikki stix.

We've done the round trip twice. Love that it's non stop EWR-HNL, especially the return overnight flight. You get a full day at Aulani before the return.

As others have said, USB charging is available at the seat and wifi is available for a fee. You'll need to bring food as the snacks they serve are not enough for such a long flight. The best part (especially for my kids, and used extensively on the flight to HNL) is the entertainment system where screens are mounted on the back of every seat so that each passenger can watch what they want. A large selection of movies and games are available.

Go to UA's website. You can find information there on the type of plane you will be flying, as well as the entertainment options and seat charging options.

No airline serves free meals in economy on domestic flights. Bring whatever food you will need or be prepared to buy it onboard. UA only accepts payment via credit cards.

A physician's note is unnecessary. Medical devices are allowed as carry on baggage and do not count against your carry on allowance.

Dont count on it though! We had one United flight two years ago with NO charging options and the wifi was down so we were really stuck once our batteries drained.

Delta does on their ATL - HNL flights. This began as of 9/15/16. All classes, including economy, receive a full meal and complimentary alcohol. We just took this flight going and coming from Honolulu, and they gave us a TON of food - a hot meal and a turkey sandwich later on in the flight, with snacks in between.

Thank you for the info and advice! I will have our flight info soon from Make a Wish so can look into everything you suggested. 28 days! She is so excited.

I'm still a bit worried because that's not what it shows on their website--still shows "food for purchase" which means snack stuff mostly and often sells out. Or at least it still showed that when I looked on Friday. I'd really rather fly Delta but it's not my cheapest option (but still close). But knowing we don't have to pack 8 hours worth of food for 4 (potentially bored and awake) people is worth a few bucks :)

We travel with a lot of medications. Do not pack any medical items in checked luggage. You are allowed any extra carry on necessary for medical needs, and that doesn't count against any luggage allowance. It is too risky to check medicine or other things (nebulizers, etc...). You don't need any notes.
