Hi everyone, I had a flight booked to Myrtle Beach this July canceled it due to the virus. We were thinking of going to DW in August if things get better. United Airlines gave me a credit for the flights and said I have until February to use it. If I had to cancel again will I get another credit or lose it completely? Every time I call United I get a different answer depending on who I talk too. Thank you.

I believe the answer that you actually want is “no” — right now, United is allowing changes to travel through May 31. While the above post mentions you gave two years to use, if you do book in August with your credits then you have made a new reservation. Some airlines have changed their policies to allow changes on new bookings during this time but United does not appear to be one of them.

If you decide not to go on your August trip then you will be subject to any change fees unless United extends its waiver policy or the flight is cancelled.

I thought that DoT regulations required a full refund on cancelled flights if the customer wanted one?

Thank you. I just called them again and they said if I cancel I get another credit, but it may be subject to change fees. Everyone seems to have different answers when I call.

Everything is changing so quickly and so frequently. So here is another thing that may want you to purchase your tickets for August:

https://www.united.com/ual/en/us/fly/travel/notices.html#ChangeFeeTerms
So, per their website, they are saying new bookings through April 30th will also have change fees waived should you need to cancel plans. This is where every airline is a little different. Delta has said new bookings through the end of May will have no change fees.

The way this reads (at least to me) is that your credit is your credit and you can use that for up to 24 months. You can also use it now to create a new reservation for August. If you do that by April 30th, if you need to change your plans, then your change fees will be waived. If you wait until May 1st (as of right now) then your new reservation will be subject to change fees.
