Unimpressed with Beach Club

My DH & I went on our first WDW vacation for our 1st anniversary in 10/01 and stayed at the BC. We arrived late and were told we had gotten our requested non smoking, king bed. We walked about 20 minutes to our room and when we got there, my DH was not impressed. We have stayed at really nice hotels and he couldn't imagine that this was a deluxe hotel. As others have stated, it is very worn looking. There was a pretty bad stain on the carpet and a hole in the bedspread. Additionally, there were 2 beds (not sure if queens or doubles), and the room smelled strongly of smoke. I called the front desk and they said we should come back to the front desk to figure out something different. When we got there, the CM said that for some reason they had sent us to a smoking double. They eventually sent us to one of those kings with the beds that fold down and the wet bar. (Sico or something). This process took about 1.5- 2 hours with lots of walking (all at about 1am).

Again, it was not what we thought we would be getting for the price paid. The theming and the pool are great, but the rooms/furnishings are not impressive and just look outdated/worn. I loved the feel of the WDW resorts, but it took a lot of convincing to get my DH back there. In 9/02, we went to the BCV. It was a lot nicer/newer, but the housekeeping was not great. I know it's a DVC, but when a room service tray with half eaten food sits outside the room next to you for 2 days, that's pretty gross. I finally took it to the elevator lobby and put it on the table figuring someone would finally see it. Also, I didn't even know about the towel animals until I began reading these boards. We didn't get any at the BC or the BCV. This year we are staying at the BWVs and I am hoping that our expectations are met!! :D

We stayed at the BC 2yrs ago. There were 5 in our room but they gave us a room for 4. They put a cot in the room til they could move us the next day. With the cot in front of the door, we couldn't go on the balconey to see the waterview we paid extra for(it was a quiet pool view which I think should cost less than a real waterview). We were surprised at how small the rooms were and we felt VERY crowded. Front desk wasn't very helpful. After 1 night, we asked to be transfered to the Polynesian. We got a "real" waterview there and the rooms were spacious. Even though we enjoyed walking on the Boardwalk the 1st night, we would never stay at BC again.

Yikes! By the looks of the pricing, I thought that BC was something really special. We are staying there this December and I am hoping that the rooms have been refurbed at least. Does anyone know? Also, it seems that some rooms are doubles, some are queens or kings. What's the deal with this? Hope I am not in for a big let down....:(

Kaitysmom, the rooms have recently been refurbished. I did not see anything in our room that was worn at all. Here's a link to my pictures of the room so you can see it:

The pictures are a little dark, sorry about that.

Are the rooms at YC a different size than BC? We stayed at YC the last week of May and found the rooms to be plenty big, two queens and a daybed. Absolutely loved the place and especially the location. I have no other deluxe experience to compare though. Lucked into a very low rate or we wouldn't have got to stay in a deluxe this time. My only complaint we be the lack of quick place to grab a bite, I'm used to having food courts open very late to have a late inexpensive dinner. As far as the resort goes if I could get another low rate like I had again I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

Thanks ead79 - the room looks really nice and I am relieved to hear that things may have changed since a couple years back. I can't wait for our trip :)

Kaitysmom,
I posted earlier about our feeling that the BC looked worn. I just looked at the pictures posted by ead79 and that room looks nothing like the one we had in 2001 (different coloring/furnishings, etc.). I guess we just hit it right before the refurbishment. Hope it goes better for you guys!!
:D

Ok, now I'm worried. I changed my reservations from CBR to BC based on the fact that I was told the five of us in our family would be comfortable in one room at BC. I switched because we originally had two rooms at CBR and I felt it would be more cost effective to share one room, plus we would get to try out SAB. When I made the change, the CM told me that we would get a room with two queens and a daybed. Is it that they would give us a room with double beds instead of queen with five people?

Castillo Mom
This happened to us but I think that it was a freak accident. We had 3 rooms reserved under 1 name and I think the number of people in each room might have gotten mixed up. I would call and just confirm that you have a room with a daybed. Don't be worried. These are people's opinions and you will find differing opinions on every resort. Not everyone likes the same thing. Enjoy your trip.

We just returned from the BCV - we had a great time. We ran into some snags at first though. I requested a quiet room (I'm a very light sleeper). They put us on the 5th floor right over the quiet pool (rm 536). The quiet pool is NOT quiet at all (yelling and screaming at 1AM)! Also, the room was directly across from the ice/vending area. And the kitchen faucet spewed water all over the counter when it was turned on (how do you miss that??) I reported the faucet, I hope it has been fixed.

We moved the next day - a pain because we had to check-out and check back in which meant extra luggage tips we weren't expecting (we had 11 pieces). The front desk was hit or miss. Some CMs were great, one in particular was a sarcastic grump. (I did call and report him for un-Disney-like conduct).

The second room was great (rm 547). It was a wooded view - very quiet. The bathroom wasn't as clean as I would have hoped. Serious mold in the shower (yuck!) and the floor in the bath and kitchen were "sticky". I could tell this room was "well-used". Fortunately, we're FL res. Since we drive, I bring some cleaning supplies (just in case). I took care of the cleaning myself. The TV remote was broken, but engineering brought us a new one within 1/2 an hour.

We loved the location and view of 547. We couldn't see Epcot, but the woods were lovely and at night you could see the Boardwalk through the trees.

Don't set your heart completely on SAB either. We ate at Beaches and Cream on Sun. of Labor Day weekend and SAB was closed for 6-8 hours we were told because someone "soiled" the water and they had to shock it. We saw a big child, perhaps 12, have a complete and total melt down over this. Felt so sorry for her parents, but they should have hauled her up to the room for a loooong nap.

Anyway, I know it can happen anywhere, but it seems a lot of people pick BC mainly for SAB and they need to remember that it is not a guaranteed amenity.

The BC is by far our favorite resort at WDW. I can't remember any problems but for the one time we received a room without a day bed...and we were quickly changed to another room without problem.

The only resort I would like to try other than BC is AKL but the rest of the family won't hear of it because they can't walk to EPCOT or MGM and you need to take a bus everywhere.

They like the fact that you can take a bus, boat or walk to other parks. Also the plus of having numerous restaurants and entertainments close at hand.

Oh, and SAB has never been closed any of the times we have visited.

We just stayed at the Dolphin and were very happy with our stay. I was hoping to stay at BC on our next trip since we love the Epcot location, but it sounds like we're better off at the Swan/Dolphin, plus it's a little cheaper. I always thought BC would be a big upgrade from the Swan/Dolphin, but maybe I'm wrong. We had no trouble with noise or cleanliness. And now the Dolphin will be getting the Heavenly Beds that the Swan has.

Wow sorry to hear about the bad expereince. We decided to do part of our stay at the swan. We only ate at Cape May Buffet Dinner this time and sent the dss to Beaches and Cream. We have stayed at both beach club and yacht club. That scaffolding was an eyesore this time and at the swan we also had to share the boats and busses with yacht/beach and boardwalk. We chose the FTP for Poly. For a deluxe result the beach club is a good location but refilling the mugs is a hassle, as is quick snacks and no free kids activities like poly. For the price we decided to try the swan and my dss loved the grotto pool, beach volleyball etc. at the swan. Wanted to maybe try the swan boats but ran out of time. We also had issues at the both yacht and beach club too. Roll away instead of daybed, room not made up because we accidently left the do not disturb sign on. etc. The swan grotto pool is not exactly sab but it is good for us. Lots of lounge chairs etc. But the swan also has the mug and snack issues too. I am just wondering why its so hard to refill the mugs. Here is my theory. Since they already know about all the wdw guests who just "visit" the y and bc resort and have fixed the pool access problem, then maybe they might think they would have a drink "access" problem with all the visitors. Just thinking.

I recently stayed at the YC and I was underimpressed also> I wouldn't recommend it. Next time I am trying the Swan/Dolphin.
