unhappy times in wdw

We'd gone to WDW the first week of December 2004. My SIL had been having horrible back pain that her doctor had diagnosed as sciatica. Well, being a therapist, I knew it wasn't sciatica and kept pushing her to ask for a referral to an orthopedist. She ended up going to the ER one night (while we were at WDW) because the pain was so bad. Over the last three days of our trip, the ER doc discovered a mass, she was transferred to the University of Michigan Medical Center, and diagnosed with Stage IV Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. We were on pins and needles the whole trip, waiting for phone calls, offering to come home NOW if she wanted us to, unsure what to do . She kept saying "No, stay because there's nothing you can do." When we got the diagnosis (on our last day), we felt awful for not being there.

The story has a happy ending though. The day after week came home, I discovered I was pregnant with my first child. The following June, after 6 months of chemotherapy, my SIL was pronounced to be in remission and is still in remission now. The oncologist said it was a miracle.

At any rate, THAT'S what I call an unhappy time in WDW.

Took samples of the dead 'pests' (the lice medicine took them out, I guess) that were smaller than ground pepper to NC State's Veterinary School for analysis, and they turned out to be fowl mites, that live on diseased and dieing birds, but would seek another bird host as the bird dies. Very rarely will they adopt a non-fowl host, but my wife must have been a suitable host.

So, avoid the dead birds at Epcot.

Yuk! Is that how bird flu is transmitted from birds to mammals?

That's how the bubonic plague is transmitted from rats to humans, right?

In August 2005 I was in WDW with my family staying at the BWV.
We had internet access so I went on AIM in the evening to talk to some of my friends and I got a little curious and started looking through some stuff that my boyfriend had posted on his own forum.
And sure enough I found some pretty nasty things on there said about me and him and somethings that should never EVER be repeated especially on an online forum! It was hurrendous (sp.) because that very week was our 1year and half and he left me a letter in my luggage and all sorts of cutsie things, but I couldn't enjoy it after seeing what he said about me and about the things he had to do for his gf (talking about it in a very negatory way) and when I caught him with the cookie crumbs on his mouth he was just like "what cookies?" ugh oy vey....there is so much more to the horrible tale than this.

Luckily I was able to just tough it out and we went in December 2005 for Christmas and I will be going for the 4th of July with my new dbf :)
So all in all it worked out for the best....C'est la vie! :hippie:

I guess trips to WDW must be like childbirth, there's so much joy that when you have a bit of sadness/pain you forget about it, or at least I did til I was halfway through the thread.
We were in line for the Kali River Rapids, our first time on the ride, it's August and hot hot hot and it's the second to last ride of the trip. I was wearing sandals, which is good for a water ride. Well my son took a step back at the same time I took a step forward and I jammed my toe into the bottom of his shoe. It hurt sooooo baaaaaad, I thought I was going to hit the ground but it was just me and the kids so I sucked it up. I squeaked out "I'm fine", then the pain started to let up a bit and my foot started feeling sticky. I had ripped 90% of my big toe nail off and my toe was bleeding like crazy. My son was so upset, he felt guilty because it was the bottom of his shoe, I reassured him many times. He would not stop yapping til I went to first aid. I told him that nail will just fall off eventually. I ended up going to first aid and they said "follow up with your primary care dr" and again I said "yeah yeah, it will just fall off. Well it got infected and they had to surgically remove the toenail

Walking through Epcot after CP/LC in Dec 2005 in tears because I just knew that my dog had died (no one had told me, but I could feel that he was gone).

And, obviously, no one likes leaving, so I'm always a bit depressed on the last day!

30 years ago...I was only two years old at the time so I don't remember most of this. My mother was 6 months pregnant and got sick from a meal she had eaten. She had a food allergy she didn't know about. Anyways, the vomiting triggered labor and she gave birth to a premature baby girl, my little sister, who only lived for a day. So when you think of what a bad time you are having because your kids misbehave or you lose something, remember that things could be worse! That is what I do if I am having a bad day.

This happened in December '02. I was 3 months pregnant and had just checked in at the All-Stars, when I started cramping among other things. I called my Doctor back home. He told me that I was having a miscarriage, to put my feet up and wait for it to happen.

So for hours...I lied there praying and crying. The next afternoon, I felt better so my husband put me in a wheelchair and we went to the parks.

The entire vacation, I couldn't ride anything and I was scared the entire time. We would have come home, but my then 3 year old was so excited to be at WDW and I wanted him to enjoy his trip.

As soon as we got home, I had an ultrasound the next morning. I expected to discover that my child was gone...but he was there, his little heart beating away!!!!

The doctor thinks that I may have been pregnant with twins and lost one on that trip. I will never know...

He is now 2 & 1/2 years old! For a long time after that vacation, I couldn't even talk about it. And I haven't stayed at All-Star Sports since then.

I feel so sorry for those Moms that have had miscarriages there. It really is the most magical place and it is so hard when something bad happens.

My sister had a miscarriage at Disney. I had almost forgotten; she's had a total of three, one before each baby she has carried to term. It was sad, but she's a nurse and took it in stride.

Well, not WDW, but we were in Universal this year when we got a phone call from my sisters boyfriend. He was watching our cat while we were gone and he told us that he thought she had died.
We tried not to let it ruin or day, but it defnitely put a damper on things- we had her for 19 years! But then later that night, we found out she was ok.
Unfortunately though, since she was sick, she did die a couple weeks after that incident. :(

Out of over 35 trips, I've had two bad instances. First was when my grandson spent too much time in the sun and got ill. They were in the room next to us (my daughter and her son) and he spent the night and next day throwing up. We called housekeeping for new blankets (my daughter washed out the used ones and put them in the tub). They didn't come all that night. The next morning we called three more times and finally put the dirty stuff outside the door (where it sat until regular housekeeping came at 4 pm) and used the stuff from our second bed. Our daughter insisted we go ahead out with friends for dinner. Her son got even sicker, and she called the desk to see if she could get something to eat delivered, and they said no. She said she couldn't leave him (6 at the time) and he was very ill and she couldn't bring him. Nope, they said again. She knew I had oatmeal and light food in my room, so she propped open her door, went to go into our room, and the key we left with her didn't work (we never thought to try it first). She called the desk again, to explain about getting food from our room, and they said they couldn't give her a new key. He ended up in the hospital (my grandson) for about a week when we went back home.
Second bad time was a year ago February, when my other daughters connecting room to us was robbed at Pop Century on our first evening there..although that ended up ok, with Disney reimbursing us.

Our first Christmas at DW 2005--just before we left, DH came down with some sort of sickness that affected his energy level/appetite. Dec is a bit chilly in the parks, especially at night, so that aggravated his condition. By Christmas Day, I had whatever he had. We had to cancel our ADR's, and the next day we spent most of the day sleeping in our hotel. Finally left the next morning, earlier than planned, and I had to drive the 7 hours home while my DH slept and coughed. I had planned this trip for the two of us for months, but he may never want to try Dec. there again. (But we'll be going in April!)

Just remembered another one--a couple of Decembers ago, my DH, stepson, and I are asleep in our room at AKL, having arrived back late after taking in the late show of Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue. My stepson, a PICKY eater, only had milk and baked beans. (Can you see where I'm going with this?) So, at 1 am with curdled milk and beans in his stomach, sits up in his top bunk and proceeds to HURL all over the room. (Scenes from "The Exorcist" are haunting us...) Poor kid...we call housekeeping and they send up someone as soon as they can, but the smell is overpowering. While they're cleaning the room, we go downstairs and ask if there are any other rooms available that we might be able to transfer to. We originally had a savannah room, but they were able to switch us to a pool-view room. We had been looking forward to the savannah view, but we were just thrilled that, at such a late hour and with the "fault" being completely ours, they were willing to help us out as much as they could! They even offered to call the local hospital and send an ambulance. What great CM's--they turned a miserable event into an act of kindness!
