Unexpected Money

I'm not so sure. He does say, "be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful." I totally believe in his philosophy and right now invest in a mix of Dividend "Aristocrats", some Mutual Funds, and hedging with CD's because of the rates for the next year or so. I had some cash sitting around waiting for the floor to drop and Palantir was down to $8 so about a month ago I figured that's fairly low risk for a tech stock that has some upside ...it's up over $15 now. I'm just going to hold on and see where it goes. Sure, if I had Buffett's money I probably would never invest in it ...but I don't. You have to take some risk to make a gain, especially in today's market.

The best success comes from buying and holding diversified assets. Playing individual stocks is gambling. It usually ends up losing people money.

That stock was at $45 like 2 years ago. The 12 month target is set to somewhere between $11 and $15. You've likely made as much as you will on it.

Any amount of surprise money that you can shower down over your head is a windfall

Not necessarily. It is usually associated with a "large amount of money or good fortune."

Money is relative. Maybe $2500 is a windfall to some. It isn't to me. To me, $250,000 would be a windfall.
OP clearly thinks it’s a windfall, or they wouldn’t have asked the question.

I guess we will have to wait for OP to confirm that.

I wouldn't necessarily equate unexpected money to a windfall.

We got exactly that amount as unexpected money recently and I didn't feel like it was a windfall. It was simply money we forgot we were owed.

I would add it to my checking account and know my budget could be little higher each month for a while. It would probably end up in the eating out category! We're not super tight on money, but as new retirees we're following our budget closely this year to kind of monitor/adjust our income streams.

If I considered a $2,500 a windfall, I probably wouldn't be squandering it on trips, "wants," and the like. Just sayin'.

I don't care who you are $2,500 is not pocket change. The $2,500 is just what I said it was unexpected, money that I did not expect to get. I asked the question because it is fun to see how others would spend unexpected money. If you had read my second post you will see I don't plan to use it on a trip or other "wants." It is going into savings for needed home improvement/maintenance.

Time will tell …I’m playing house money right now 🤷🏻

Currently all extra money (side gigs, misc.) goes in the Weddings fund so I would put it there. I started it this winter when it became apparent I was going to need it soon for both girls. One got her ring last weekend, one is still waiting :)

Ah, yes, the wedding! DD27 has been dating a nice young man for 4 years. A wedding will be coming, probably in 2025 (don't RUSH her!). Sigh!

Ignore that comment...it was rather snide and for those who posted to assure us such a paltry amount wouldn’t ping their radar, well, yay for them, I guess. :goodvibes

I would give each of my adult kids $500 (they can spend on the kids, etc.) and keep $1,000 for ourselves. Probably towards vacation or some other item I have been waiting to buy for the house (wether it's a need/replacement, etc.). There is always something.

Would probably give some to DD to pay off one of her student loans (we were going to give her $ next month anyway for her birthday to put toward them anyway).

Last year I won what is a windfall for us and used it to replace our large wooden deck (had some rotten boards so needed work) with composite decking and new rails. Had enough left over for new deck furniture.
