Unexpected (good) outcome when booking on Delta (SkyMiles)

I was looking to book a free flight using my SkyMiles on Delta, for next January. Picked out the best flights for my schedule, and the total came to 40,000 miles, 20,000 each way. Seems it's getting harder and harder to find flights at 12,500 each way on Delta. (And I've been around long enough to remember when United and Northwest were both only 20,000 for a round trip.) Even finding trips for 32,500 (12,500 and 20,000 for the two legs) isn't easy.

So at this point, not much reason to book - I was looking early hoping to get a flight for fewer miles, and I'm pretty sure I can still get a flight for 40,000 in September, when I'll be more sure about being able to make the trip.

But just to see what I could find, I clicked through the reservation process. And once I get to the last screen - click here and you've booked the flight - there was a note at the top of the screen, something akin to "your mileage has been adjusted". Much to my surprise - I can actually book the flight for 25,000 miles.

No clue why it didn't initially show for the lower mileage, but I didn't argue. I went ahead and booked the flight, so I guess I'm locked in to going in January, a few days before my pass expires.

Now to go rustle up some DVC points and snag a room at Old Key West, where I haven't stayed in quite a while. Just gotta figure out where to spend the first half of the trip.

I used to book tons of flight with NWA at 20k RT. I have yet to book anything with delta. I have a credit card with USBank. There reward program is excellent. You can book any flight through Travelocity. When the flight is $400 or less, it costs 20k points. I love that I can use any airline. I've booked lots of flights on JetBlue and many on Delta. (The exact same flight using Delta miles would have cost me 25-30k miles.)
