My brother (42) lost his job a few weeks ago. I saw an ad in the paper for his exact career. Called to tell him and he said he saw it, but he doesn't want to work in the city it is located (we live in NJ).
I have never had to deal with unemployment...but if he goes for unemployment..don't you have to show you are looking for a job? And if a job is open that you could do...can you not take it just because of it's location?

It depends on your state. Yes you have to "show" you are looking for a job but often that is just clicking a box on a website saying you are looking. If you are OFFERED a job and turn it down, you can lose your unemployment (in our state anyway) but they can't force you to move to take a job. Just because a job is listed in the paper doesn't mean he will get an interview, let alone the job.

He would not have to move. He will not even apply for the job because of the city it is in.

I live in NJ and if I lost my job I wouldn't automatically apply for another I was qualified for it wasn't in a location I wanted to work in. Depending on where he lives and where this job is you could be talking about commuting a few hours each way. That isn't a life I'd want to live unless all my options had run out. He's only been unemployed a few weeks. He has time to explore options. Did he get a package?

In NY I had to fill out a form showing I had applied for at least ten jobs every week. I just went on Monster and sent my resume to ten places a week - never even got one call.

no package..he was let go the boss told him because the store was going under. He thinks the boss lied to him. The job is located in Newark He is not married, no children, lives with my Mom...I am sorry..there is no reason for him NOT to at the very least apply for the job. He himself said the job great, he would apply if it was not in Newark.

When I was on back when I lived in Mass you just had to call every week and you got this automated that said, we you available to work this week...1 for yes 2 for no. Did you look for work this week...Did you work this week...if you did work you have to say how much you made. I think I could earn like $140 a week and it wont affect my check any thing over $140 decreased my check by that amount. I believe now you can do it all online.

It's his choice where to apply since he'd be the one working the job. If he doesn't want to work in Newark, that's okay. He's only been unemployed a short while--either he'll find something somewhere else, or way down the road, he'll be less picky. There's nothing wrong with knowing what you do and do not want.

I agree with both of these. I also know that here in Michigan, if the job is more than X many miles away from where you are you don't get disqualified if you choose not to apply to those jobs.

Ok thanks..I just wanted to be sure he is not hurting himself by refusing to apply.
Personally I think he is being stupid...but that is for another post...

There's absolutely no way I'd knowingly apply for a job in Newark.

No he is not required to apply to every job he sees that he is qualified for. He is required to have a minimum of 3 job searches per week. He is required to accept any "suitable" job offers and what is "suitable" is very subjective.

Meh....there are two places locally I can think of off the top of my head where my background and experience are a perfect fit and I'd be a great employee there. But I wouldn't work for them unless I was starving and/or homeless because of their ethics.

I could be unemployed for 10 days and say that to some people and they'd say I was being stupid, which is fine. They're entitled to their opinion. But I'm the one who has to live day in and day out with myself working at a place where I'd be asked to lie, cheat and steal, not the person calling me stupid.

I'd cut him some slack and butt out. His career is between him and your mother (if she continues to allow him to live with her). It's NOYB.

I've worked in Newark before. Took the light rail to Penn Station, and then a very short walk. It really depends. I have several friends who work there, in the banking industry.

+1. I intentionally walked out of two different jobs because I was asked to lie about some pretty serious stuff. Within two months, both companies were under pretty major investigations. I say anybody has the right not to choose any specific employer for any reason. Now if you're my uncle and refuse to take ANY job anywhere for a number of years, that's a different story.

Yes everyone is entitled to their opinion...since none of you know my brother we will just leave it at that..it is MY opinion he is being stupid.

And I never said he was being asked to lie...he thinks his ex boss lied to him on why he was let go.

In our state, you just have to check a box on the internet saying that you looked for a job that week.

My brother worked the system for years getting unemployment checks. He never once sent out a resume or filled out an application.

He was thrilled every time Obama extended benefits :headache:

I bet if he got called in for "auditing" he wouldn't be thrilled. It's a random system and they can call you in at any time you are collecting. When they do, you need to show them where you applied every week. If you can't, then be prepared to pay every single penny back.

This I worked there for several years. Never had a problem. Worked by Penn station. The worst stuff I ever saw was during devils games

Personally I think it's wrong to not apply for a job you are qualified for just because you don't like where it is. Sorry, but unemployment is for people who are looking for a job not those that don't want to. The fact is, people need to be more flexible when looking for a job, especially if they are qualified for it. That's my issue with unemployment (and most entitlements). Most people would do whatever it took to support themselves and their families, even if it was the job they didn't want or in a location they don't like.
