Unemployment Question - Just accepted PT Employment

My son was laid off last year. The company he was with laid off almost 50% of their workforce. He just accepted a PT position with a previous employer (not the one who laid him off). He was told this position is PT for now but almost certain to go to full-time in the near future but no firm commitment.

He has no set schedule/hours. It could be as low as 20 hours one week or full time hours the following week. I know in NYS he can work up to 3 days and if he makes less than the $405 he can file a partial claim. I also know if for any reason the company decides they do not need him, he can continue to claim on his "current claim" based on how many weeks he has left.

My question is, how does he report that he is working? The big thing is he does not want to screw up his current unemployment in case they decide they no longer need his help. He currently calls in. Is it as simple as just answering the question that he has worked 2, 3, or 5 days and did or did/not make over $405?

If he works over the 3 day limit and makes more than $405 weekly, how many weeks before unemployment will close the claim? It's so hard getting a "human" to talk to at Unemployment. Is there anything else he should know or be aware of?

If anyone can shed any light into this, I would appreciate it.

I dont know about NY, but in ILL when you certify.. it asks if you worked that week, if so then you enter the gross amount of the pay earned for each week..they do the math and send a check that reflects earnings and unemployment..

We do the same in Ga.
